When Christopher says, “pull the door behind me and sit there and think for hours and it makes me very calm,” he is stating that he enjoys being alone, because it enables him to think. When Christopher thinks, he can organize all the events and thoughts that are in his mind, and it relieves stress for him. Christopher’s isolation from the rest of the world in the cupboard is beneficial, because it helped him relax and organize his thoughts. Isolation is very helpful when it comes to relaxation, and additionally, it is capable of making people happy. The following quote refers to a time when Christopher is in school and his instructor, Siobhan, is showing him pictures of faces on a card, and Christopher must identify the emotion. “I knew that it meant ‘happy’, like when I’m reading about the Apollo Space Missions, or when I am still awake at three in the morning and I can walk up and down the street and pretend I am the only person in the world” (Haddon 23). In the next quotation, Ed is speaking to Christopher about the letters from Chris’ mom, which he found in Ed’s bedroom. “It was so complicated, so difficult. And I… I said she was in the hospital. And I know it wasn’t true. But once I’d said that… I couldn’t… I couldn’t change that. Do you understand… Christopher…? Christopher…?” (Haddon 114). Ed Boone comes home to discover Christopher in his bedroom, reading letters from his mom. Ed hid these letters from Chris’ mother because he told Christopher that his mom had died in the hospital, and did not know how to tell him. “... so complicated, so difficult,” reinforces the idea of how hard it was for Ed and how this isolation from his wife caused him to accept that he made a mistake. The tone of this quote is sad, and complicated, which clearly shows how remorseful Ed is about lying. Since Ed did not tell Christopher about these letters, he isolates himself with his ex-wife and Christopher. This isolation has helped him decide that he made the wrong decision when he lied to Chris. Ed’s reaction to Christopher finding this evidence shows how it benefits his mental state, because he was honest with himself, and is remorseful in doing wrong. The assets of isolation are proven through this point, however they can also be proven through another quotation. In the succeeding quote, Ed is speaking to Christopher, and in
