Compare And Contrast Equiano And Rowlandson

Equiano and Rowlandson cope with their situations by cherishing the things that they can value like family and God, in order to show the importance of support from God, friends, and family and how this can provide comfort and hope to themselves when going through hardship. For instance, Rowlandson loses one of her children: “I must and could lie down by my dead babe, side by side all the night after. I have thought since of the wonderful goodness of God to me, in preserving me in the use of my reason and senses, in that distressed time, that I did not use wicked and violent means to end my own miserable life” (38). This shows the opposite matter to the comfort and hope from family. Without serenity, Rowlandson felt miserable due to the absence of her daughter. …show more content…
Equiano, on the other hand, reunited with his sister after being separated: “As soon as she saw me she gave a loud shriek and ran into my arms--I was never quite overpowered: Neither of us could speak, but for a considerable time clung to each other in mutual embraces, unable to do anything but weep” (54). Equiano felt devastated by the separation from his sister, however, the reunion brought back his strength. This resembles how family can provide comfort and hope because when we build relationships with others, we develop the sense and knowledge that these people matter to us. McCandless often discussed social and economical issues in his life, and it was surprising that he didn’t try to fix them, and instead escaped them. Adam Shepard conceived a plan to leave his current life and catapult himself to the rock bottom of poverty, and try to climb up to at least a moderate life. Adam Shepard was also puzzled with the social and economic issues in America, but unlike McCandless he decided to begin a project to test his own theories.…

They had to pretend that things were ok and life was good to survive their circumstances. While reading the books Night and Olaudah Equiano there is a reoccurring theme of being in denial and content, during their horrific experiences. Both books tell the personal and tragic stories of the captivation and enslavement of Jews (Night) and Africans (Olaudah Equiano) written by men that were taken captive themselves as children.…

Frequently in her poem, Bradstreet emphasizes the dichotomy between her emotions as she experiences the transpiring events and what she wants to feel through her employment of various literary tools. Her personification of her heart as she depicts “to my God my heart did cry / To straighten me in my Distress / And not to leave me succourless” (Bradstreet 8-10) emphasizes the strength of the speaker’s emotional…

The topic of the impact that grief has on an individual’s relationships is important to understanding the human condition. Some individuals suggest that the impact the grief has on an individual’s relationships will cause the individual's pain to continue for long periods because it will cause the individual not to be able to console in the ones around them who they depend upon. Others, however, believe that the impact the grief has on an individual's relationships will cause healing of the person's metaphorical scars and wounds because of the new relationships that the individual may be able to form with new people, helping them find peace. In the memoir, Lost, by Cathy Ostlere, it follows that the character of Cathy initially struggles with the impact that grief has on her relationships when her brother goes missing because the members of her family blame themselves and those around them for his loss due to their grief. However, when she goes looking for David, she breaks away from her relationships and forms new ones.…

In this extract of Daughters of the Late Colonel, Katherine Mansfield portrays to the reader her personal insights and intolerance of the patriarchy that dominated the Late-Victorian period. She particularly focuses on the entrapment and isolation women faced living in this social hierarchy, and expresses this through subtle manipulation of literary devices such as character, motif, imagery and symbolism, cast in almost satirical light that resonates throughout the entire story. Mansfield explores thoroughly the relationship between the two sisters, Josephine and Constantia, and the father they have recently lost. The title of the story immediately suggests to the reader the nature of this relationship; implying the ownership and authority…
