Inner Thoughts
It was a cold, windy, and rainy night in the inner-cities of Chicago. The darkness seemed to absorb all of the natural light it came into contact with, leaving the glaring neon to mock and distract the drivers as they hastened past. The rain splatters on my windshield, made me thankful for the warmth and protection of my little car. It had been a long day at the factory and my arms and feet ached. I literally couldn't take the time to process one more thing beside my head hitting my pillow back in my minuscule apartment, nevertheless I had come to this predicament again and a decision had to be made. The fluorescent lights surrounded my car as I sped down the street, constantly reminding me of my predicament. I started doing

Shimmering lights lit up the crowded streets of New York City like the stars of the night sky; they made up for the fact that you couldn’t see the real ones. My feet felt like concrete blocks attached to my legs as I walked, I guess you could call it, through numerous groups of locals and tourists, all I’m sure who could tell easily that I had quite an edge. They didn’t know why, and frankly neither did I. All I knew was that I wanted to be by her side. I had first encountered Mabel one random night when I stumbled upon the 42 Club after leaving work, grimy and dirty from fixing up snobby, rich guys' cars all day and hating my life.…

There I was sitting in an old 2006 Honda Odyssey driving up to my cottage on Lake Michigan. I had already been in the car for 4 hours and I was only halfway done with my journey. I didn’t know if I was going to survive. I was already missing my Lucy (my dog), and I had to live without for a week while the ferocious neighbors took care of her.…

I grew up in a neighborhood where a tourist can capture awe-inspiring pictures through their phone's or camera's. Pictures that will bring out how rich this community is. Rich in culture, food, music, and art. Pilsen, The Heart of Chicago, is beautiful in and out. From the art located in almost every corner, to the kindest hearts that live in the people who live in Pilsen.…

Chicago is a great city with even greater problems. With crime such as shootings, and homicides, at an all time high right now there is no doubt the city is falling apart. According to the Chicago Tribune, from January 1st, 2015 to December 6, 2015 the yearly total of shooting victims were 2,777 people. Not only does this number show how many people have died or been injured due to homicides or shootings, but it also gives everyone a view on the state of Chicago today. Our city is being greatly affected by perpetrators and their unfathomable acts but I believe there needs to be a change here in Chicago, and everywhere else where this is a problem.…

The alleys were eerie in the late November nights, barely lit by a single streetlight that only seemed to light up a single 6ft space. Now, there were no street lights at all, and barely anything to call an alleyway. Buildings were burnt, whole sides taken out, and the buildings gutted, leaving nothing but rusted metal and scrap pieces of paper. Boots pattered along the abandoned sidewalk with stern purpose. From their shoes to their heads they were covered with clothing, keeping the harsh winds from blowing handfuls of dust into their eyes.…

U.S. Route 52 winds and curves diagonally from the South Carolina coast to the Canadian border in North Dakota. 2,072 miles of pavement stretches through forests, fields, cities, and small towns, but only one one hundredth of a mile means anything to me. In a lonely passage connecting Dubuque to Bellevue, one specific spot shortly after a break in the trees, for one second, allows you to see 180 degrees in every direction. I anticipate it on my drive home and slow down slightly as I approach it.…

The sky above was pitch black-a growing crescent illuminated in the night. Sparkling, shiny spots illuminated in the sky. Maneuvering around the cones that the police set up, yellow vehicles honked, casting blinding streams of light that shone around the street. The numerous screens, signs, and stores lit up the area, holding hands with the city, forming a shield of comfort, warmth, and safety. Pedestrians clung together in big groups, hyped and excited for the fun just ahead, like delighted children on Christmas day receiving their presents.…

As one of the biggest cities in the United States, Chicago stretches two hundred and thirty seven miles through the state of Illinois. Chicago has roughly two million people living in one city which is one of the many reasons it is unique. That is more people than the whole state of Iowa. The town of Chicago is one unique city compared to small town Fort Madison with the super structures over towering the city, the cultural differences in the food variety there, and ethnically diverse music are some things I can’t find in Fort Madison. When I think of Chicago the first thing that comes to my mind is; the multiple story, high rise, super structures we call skyscrapers.…

The narrow stone street was overshadowed by the tall yellow buildings on either side that weren’t shy about hiding their age. There were trees that grew in places that didn’t have buildings, and those trees also provided shadows on the street. In spite of all this darkness, the street was actually quite beautiful. The buildings, trees, and road all meshed together to form a picturesque and breathtaking view. There was beauty in that street, but the vast majority of the denizens of this city didn’t even know about it.…

The air was crisp; dew dripped off of the freshly mowed lawn. A slight breeze swung me softly side to side. There I was, on the ragged concrete steps, leaning morosely aside the brick pillar.
