Chicago is a great city with even greater problems. With crime such as shootings, and homicides, at an all time high right now there is no doubt the city is falling apart. According to the Chicago Tribune, from January 1st, 2015 to December 6, 2015 the yearly total of shooting victims were 2,777 people. Not only does this number show how many people have died or been injured due to homicides or shootings, but it also gives everyone a view on the state of Chicago today. Our city is being greatly affected by perpetrators and their unfathomable acts but I believe there needs to be a change here in Chicago, and everywhere else where this is a problem. Solving this issue is important to me because I have been living in Chicago for almost nine years now and I want to leave it better than I found it. I want people to look at our …show more content…
One way I look at this situation is that guns aren't the problems but the criminals behind them are, meaning that there just doesn't need to be a gun control law to solve this issue, but a greater penalty for the criminals. Something needs to be done to reduce the easy access to guns so that felons don’t use them. I know that violence is linked with gangs, and bad influence so some ways I could change this issue is by not partaking in any of these actions, keeping up with what is going on around me, and informing others in my community about the problems our city is facing. By doing this, the ask for change isn’t only being shown by me, but by everyone else. All in all, it has become hard to ignore the problems Chicago is facing and we can’t remain silent no more. Many lives are being lost, and our city is starting to become divided. But these problems can’t go on any longer which is why there needs to be a change, a change in action and with people. When people change their community will also, bringing change for a better Chicago and a better

We have no control over the lives we are born into. Some of us are tall, others short; some blonde, others brunette; but all of us are lucky enough to have families that care for us and communities invested in our future. Imagine if you can what your life would have been like had you been born and raised in the Chicago Housing Projects. Trying to envision how different our lives might have turned out as a result would be near impossible I think—at least until Sudhir Venkatesh wrote this book. Saint Louis although “it was proclaimed a “future great city of the world”” (Kendizor) suffers greatly from poor government leadership. The city is split into many municipalities which brings difficulty into controlling areas but ease in escaping blame, i.e. Michael Brown’s death. There is a continuing trend of different branches of the government placing blame amongst one another with no action taken to solve the preexisting problem. The Riots in Ferguson were the result of the wound being depended with the shooting of Michael Brown, he was one of many, he just happened to garner the national spotlight and bring attention to the city’s sordid past and it’s continuing “run around” practices “Michael Brown is dead, Darren Wilson is rich, and the streets he patrolled lie in ruins. This is not healing but salt in the wound” (Kendizor)…

The leaders involved include Mayor Rahm Emmanuel, individual Aldermen, and other Public officials. Chicago's leaders can learn from the leaders of Charleston and Elgin in the sense that they actually care about making changes. They put together plans to change and use community partnerships and leverage the government to get involved through policy. It seems that an issue with Chicago's public officials is the fact that they are just trying to get re-elected. Instead of focusing on creating real change and letting results speak for themselves.…

One issuing facing urban communities that I feel passionately about is the school to prison pipeline. The reason this issue motivates me is that I do not see a lot of resources in our urban schools. One of the reasons is that adults give up on at risked youth in urban school districts. They do not have funding for guidance counselors. The main thing that sets up this pipeline is that the zero tolerance policy we use with our youth.…

Since the beginning of civilization there has been crime. People, for years, have tried to eliminate crime in many ways. For many today, people believe prision is a way to be rid of crime and keep our streets safe. To believe that prison is the only way is a path of ignorance. Proof of this comes from; a town in Georgia has figured out an issue that Chicago has been dealing with for years, a criminology report has shown the failures of a prison, and the fraction of issues stopped but a majority rise.…

Every day in the local news, viewers witness a host of tragedies that have hit Chicago every weekend and sometimes every night. Many of the stories featured concern gun violence and the amount of deaths or injuries resulting from it. It has become a problem so synonymous with our city that many people, from neighborhood activists to politicians at Capitol Hill, have expressed their opinions as to what the city and its residents could do to either minimize or eradicate the violence. In late 2013, the state of Illinois passed the Concealed Carry Law which permitted registered gun owners to carry a concealed weapon on their person. Though many pro-gun activists viewed this as a win and an enforcement of their protection under the 2nd Amendment,…

Every week, dozens of lives are taken in the city of Chicago through the use of gun violence. These homicides happen most commonly in the southern neighborhoods of the city, notably areas such as Englewood, Austin, and Humboldt Park just to name a few. It just so happens that the city of Chicago is the city in which it is most difficult to acquire a firearm of any sort with the proper licensing. It is so difficult that we are ranked 1st when it comes to gun control in the United States of America. We are also ranked 1st when it comes to homicides in the U.S.A.…

Moreover, with Chicago’s ban on gun shops, shooting ranges, assault weapons, and high-capacity magazines, those guns would have had to be brought in illegally. According to a report in May 2013 from the Bureau of Justice Statistics, 37.4% of state prison inmates who had or used a firearm, said that they obtained it from a friend or family member. ( Should More Gun Control Be Enacted ). Those inmates did not own guns, so they got it from law-abiding citizens such as their friends or family. Nevertheless, gun control only takes away the guns from citizens who follow the law; criminals do not care whether there are gun control laws or not, they will keep getting guns by any means…

It is understood that by moving higher and middle class people into these low income areas it makes the neighborhoods a “safer” area. In an editorial entitled “Bring on the Hipsters,” the Economist, a weekly newspaper, claim that gentrification puts “pressure on schools, the police and the city to improve” (2). Although people can argue this is true, there is no evidence that this happened in all areas that have been gentrified. The problem is that cities should not have to move people out of their houses to improve the areas safety and schools. Once these old local members move into new communities they should not have to deal with the same crimes that might have been going on with their old communities.…
