Hoover strongly believes that Ms. Maldonato, the immigrant whose success in two languages, English and law, was enhanced and supported by key figures in her life, and this is what helped to lead her to pursue her career as a paralegal. Such key figures included her professor, her academic advisor, and her employers, in addition to her determination. That made her career easier and more meaningful ultimately. It is very essential that students have key figures in their lives who will motivate them through both their academic and lingual careers. In other words, reaching your goals will not be very difficult and demanding if the important element is present, which is key figures. This is because students will feel truly strong and confident about themselves, no matter how hard the journey is. Erdrich exclaims in her article how she feels both attached to the Ojebwe language that connects her to religion, heritage, and culture and also feels that she is betraying her mother language by learning it at the same time. Most people agree that when students start learning a new language, they neglect their mother language sometimes and they stop using it as much as before. It is undeniable that you are more focused on the new language than your native language. However, a language that ties you with religion and spirituality cannot be disregarded. Even if the language gets translated, the actual meaning will not be as meaningful as in its original language. In addition, maintaining two languages could be challenging from time to time, but is never impossible, which means putting a lot of effort in your learning journey. In other words, it truly broadens your horizons and makes you more knowledgeable when compared to those who do not speak that particular language. Meaning, you start having a greater understanding of the world by listening to music, watching movies, approaching the literature and history, and other fascinating kind of things about the new language as well as experiencing a new culture. The overall process my English learning process was easy I believe because I grew up learning it. Learning English was such a fabulous experience in my life. My father and my teachers were the key figures in this learning process. My father used to revise English, Science, and Mathematics with me since I was five, whereas my mother will revise the other subjects that were taught in Arabic with me because she only spoke Arabic and French. In primary school, I was an excellent student according to my English teacher, except for when it came to conversation. For instance, the English grade was at that time split into four categories writing, listening, speaking, and grammar. I will get A’s in all but C’s/D’s in speaking. Gradually, my speaking skills improved in secondary school as I started engaging myself in English activities. As a consequence, English became one my favorite subjects at school. Furthermore, speaking English made me socialize and build friendships with people from different countries both in my country and in the U.S, and earned the opportunity to get an external scholarship.
