How would one come to a realization of the importance of honor if one never lives within its boundaries? How would one hold upon their own beliefs even while walking the lonely and forgotten path? How would one understand the importance of each action if one does not know its reaction? In today's society, honor is being disband by millennials. They no longer desire to become those heroes of the past who value their own honor. Some school systems today, teach their students the importance of honor through honor codes. Honor codes upheld by students and peers help enforce an atmosphere where one's own accountability is able to shine. One of the main reason teachers hand out assessments is to test an individual's own understanding. If the individuals located within the class cheat, the score becomes the classes knowledge not the individual and the process fails completely. Honor codes should be established and maintain a honor system because of what they uphold, why their are created, and how they affect the society as well as the individual. What do honor codes uphold? First, they uphold the underlying ability to be a happy person. According to Source B, honor codes can affirm that “each student will behave honestly and responsibly at all times.” In other words, they will live honestly with themselves, peers, acquaintances, and family as well as responsibly in the workforce as well as personal endeavors and family. Honesty and responsibility are the founding attributes for worker who has climbed the ladder to success. Employees are more likely to hire those who are honest and can be relied upon. Secondly, Source B also explains how enforced honor codes held “students have reminders of these moral values.” This means, that personally knowing and understanding that honor codes are enforced in your school leaves a heavier impact upon one's choices. Secondly, honor codes are enforced upon all individuals in all different aspects of a high school life. One cannot categorize all students upon one type of person, every student comes to school “somewhere on the continuum between...a ‘cheater type [and] an ‘honest type’” (Source C). Furthermore, every student is on their own level of honesty and responsibility. They can choose whether or not to follow the honor codes enforced but they can not choose their own consequences set up by the rules. Next, why are honor codes created? First, a society that can be favorable can be created through honor codes. Highlighted in source F, “a culture that makes most forms of serious cheating socially unacceptable among the majority of students” has been achieved through honor codes enforced at colleges. Some students believed that honor codes was “another rule to obey” (Source B). This statement is true. All rules are set forth for protection and for the populations tranquility. Without rules, no one could be happy nor safe nor independent or dependent. Therefore, honor codes are their for students protection from plagiarism, failure, and cheating. Secondly, this point can be proven through the evidence that “students at colleges with honor codes-typically student-enforced- cheat less than their counterparts elsewhere do” (Source C). This adds physical statistics that schools who enforce honor codes, are more likely to possess more honesty within its students. Therefor, my school should enforce honor codes to better add good morals to the students who attend the school. To further add, honor codes should be enforced by a student body. This will help the students who don’t cheat feel more in control of their own success. Source F explained how “relying on peer monitoring to control cheating” helped the success rate of honesty and integrity. In other words, a cheaters peer convicted them of their actions not some stuffy old teacher who seemed unfair and unrealistic. This method of student involvement helped “students understand the value of academic integrity” (source F). To summarize, many students not understand the importance of academic integrity. Academic integrity is valued because it can influence the student's whole life as well as their future decisions and opportunities.
