During the French Restoration lipstick was supposed to indicate you were healthy and fun-loving. Most women were very natural and only used face creams and stayed in the shade. They would strive for a clean and flawless complexion. If you were tan you were considered lower-class. Later on, red lipstick was a sign that a woman had independence. However they always provided a rosy color to their cheeks using red chalk, rose petals, crocodile poop, and other things. Romans preferred long eyelashes for eye makeup, they used an oil-dipped rounded stick to put on coal, a common ingredient. Makeup was very helpful at this time because the stage lighting was usually lit by gas stoves and candles, which helped bring out their faces. Women throughout history put their health at risk with many of their homemade cosmetics. In some cultures, women used arsenic, lead, mercury, and even leeches to give themselves the pale appearance deemed beautiful in the old days.
