The first day I went back to school, I was really tired. It was tremendously hard to stay awake in class, but I needed to study. Mrs. Schachter said, “Alex, you look droopy. Do you need to go to the clinic?” “I’m just tired, that’s all,” I told her. “I don’t need to go see the nurse.” I still was not one hundred percent healthy. I was kind of sick and did not feel like studying. I just felt like sitting on my couch and watching TV all day long. When I got home, I told my mom, “I don’t think I’m ready to be back in school yet. I still feel really sleepy.” “Honey, the doctor said you’re healthy enough to go back to school, but let’s make sure you get some good rest tonight,” my mom said. She gave me chicken soup for dinner, and I went to bed early. The next day, Mrs. Schachter told me I had to take a makeup test. I said, “Sure, I’ll do it in study hall.” At end of the day, I headed to Mrs. Spas’ classroom for study hall. I had not studied a lot, and I hardly knew the lesson at all. I was trying to stay calm, but I was asking a bunch of questions trying to kill as much time as I could before I had to start the test. There must have been about thirty questions, but that seems long when you haven’t been at school to learn the lessons that well. The first five questions were multiplying humongous numbers and long division like twelve divided by one hundred and forty four. At the time, that was really hard for me. I went pretty slowly, and I checked my work. The next ten questions were on mean, median, and mode, which I was OK at. The last section was division and multiplication with mental math, which I could ace with one eye open and only a pencil. It took the whole study hall period to finish the test, but I actually ended up thinking I did pretty well. I said “I think I did pretty well.” A few days
