Essay On Wag The Dog And Trump's Campaign

A representational study of Levinson’s film, Wag the Dog and Saturday Night Live’s (SNL) parody of ‘Donald Trump’s Campaign’ highlights the perspective that shortcomings of both individuals and society are often revealed with through political acts. While both texts highlight the failures and corrupt behaviour of individuals in political acts to be prominent factors of shortcomings, we are able to understand the representation of such undertakings to influence judgment in society. It is the overall study of both text, do we understand the significance of political acts to present a particular perspective that exemplifies the flaws in both individuals and society.

It is apparent that the attempts of trying to hide the scandals and corrupt nature of individuals only convey the indecent truth to society. As demonstrated in the opening scene of ‘Wag the Dog’, low-key lighting and diegetic sounds of the vacuum cleaner dominates the scene, indicative of a sense of secrecy. Such symbolic use of the vacuum reflects the need to ‘clean up’ the ‘mess’ in politics, causing audiences to consider the ‘dirty’ nature of politicians and the acts erected. The sense of cleaning after unseen acts as shortcomings committed by individuals is emphasised with the manipulation of low angle shots as it captures Brean walking through the corridor on business to solve the president’s scandal, presenting the need for powerful figure to ‘fix out of line’ actions. As a result, audiences are positioned to be wary of the actions individuals take to hide their offences as a shadow envelopes Brean’s figure upon entering the bunker room. Moreover, the low key lighting indicates the false and dishonest nature of Brean whose help is needed to cover up the indecent act of the president by creating a distraction further emphasises the fragile image of righteousness and that the sins committed by individuals are easily revealed. In contrast in SNL’s parody of Donald Trump’s campaign, the composer manipulates satire to mock Trump’s political acts to highlight his biased viewpoint and corrupt nature. That is to say, a officer worker claims she “likes how he is looking towards solutions” in the aspect of terrorism humors audiences as it references the ridiculous political attempts of ‘kicking out Muslims’ as a solution to the threats of terrorism. Accordingly, audiences are convinced to view Trump in a negative light in response to his corrupt ideals and dislike, highlighting his shortcomings. Furthermore, the approach in which mis en scene is used to communicate similarities in the destructive ideals of Donald trump by comparing him to Hitler. Stemmed from the medium shot that captures a man in a collared shirt stating that Trump can “take our economy from here to here” whilst flashing the Nazi armband. Hence symbolism connotes possibilities of disaster and war as a result of electing Trump as president, discrediting Trump for his history of rash thinking and biased perspective compelling responders to be unsupportive towards him. Thus, it can be seen that an individual’s flaws in outlook and actions can be reinforced through political acts. Levinson considers the gullibility of society as a shortcoming for believing political acts. This is demonstrated in the ‘old shoe’ scene where Brean and Motts attempt to heighten attention towards efforts to rescue Schumann, a military figure. At this point, montages of medium shots capturing the hanging of old pairs of shoes on city lines from

The low angle shot of a man as he paints in white text “white power” exemplifies the dominating racist views in society in influencing perspective. In particular, the use of satire in ‘white power’ mirrors the biased views of Trump as he fails to approach problems without consideration for society. Under the circumstances, audiences are disappointed in the inevitable bias society has in affecting judgment thus enriching our understanding of recognising such faults. Additionally, the montage of different American citizens ironing Ku Klux Klan uniforms and targeting Muslims further emphasise the ethnocentric views as shortcomings in society. As satire is manipulated, it continues to mock the histories of American turmoil and hint at the future wrong doings Trump may apply causing us to frown upon racist perspectives in society. In being confronted with such implications in public judgment, SNL has effectively communicated the underlying perspectives of society in support of political acts exposing the

The President does use pathos the most, accessing all citizens’ emotions and sense of patriotism to convince them to re-elect him. For example, when summarizing all of Rumson’s horrible actions, President Shepherd says “[...] you go on television, and you call her a whore” (Sorkin). President Shepherd’s use of the word ‘whore’ reveals his effective use of pathos, as shown by the reaction of our class, along with the audience ’s stifling silence.…

in a stunning case of irony a fictional comic on the “welfare queen” by the onion's fake editorial artist “kelly” has been taken up by the very source of its satire; anti-welfare peddlers. rightfully so, the originally over the top cartoon has now become a representation of all that conservative republicans find wrong with social welfare. However, it goes beyond that, appearing at first like any american editorial cartoon with its simple lines with blatant labels on benign seeming personal attire. This cartoon uses these in an appeal to the emotions from a bystander's point of view in an example of the Pathos form of rhetoric, attempting to take it beyond a normal political cartoon and into the realm of satire . As Abraham Lincoln states “Nearly all men can stand adversity, but if you want to test a man’s character, give him power”. This demonstrates that having control is truly the common goal of all people in high political positions, and one’s true personality is revealed once power and control is in reach. Individuals of political teams are separated by their reason for their power hunger, but are united by their common goal of control, which is achieved through manipulation of the vulnerable members of society – the public. This is reflected in Levinson’s 1997 satirical film ‘Wag the Dog’ which highlighted the corruption of politics, and political teams, encouraging the audience to become more critical consumers. Creedance Clearwater Revival’s…

After the presidential election, Donald Trump was elected president. Riots broke out, feminists cried, and some people moved to Canada. Honestly trump isn't that bad, he can't start a war in the next 4 years (hopefully), every law and bill he can make has to go through the supreme court, and he cannot change the amendments. So he doesn't really have that much power. So my three issues for trump are wars, taxes, and the wall.…

Domestic tranquility in the United States is outlined by the Constitution and can be better understood as the way in which society lives in harmony (Wilson). Unfortunately, society has not reached a state of tranquility yet. This can be traced to ideas of racism, sexism, and other means of discrimination in the United States. Although some strides have been made to try and counteract these modes of discrimination, society has recently taken a step back in its development towards a tranquil state. Specifically, the rhetoric used by Donald Trump has been linked to ideas of racism and sexism.…

With the illegalization of segregation and the election of a black president, white Americans are quick to say that racism is a thing of the past. It is true that in the U.S., nicknamed appropriately as the great “Melting Pot”, cultural exchange is far from rare. However, in far too many cases, cultural appreciation is used as an excuse for the racist or ignorant to use artifacts or participate in practices sacred to an oppressed culture. White Americans specifically often feel a certain entitlement to appropriate culture, but will play the role of the victim when called out for racism. My analysis will focus on The Skeleton Key (Iain Softley, 2005) as a reflection of the ingrained systemic racism in American culture.…

While President Paul Kagame congratulated Trump over Twitter after he won election, others in his government have suggested their disapproval with some of his executive orders. At Trump’s first speech as President at the inauguration was the slogan: ‘America First.’…
