Battles over who deserves to be an American citizen has always been a prominent debate in American society; this is especially true now. With the rise of “Trumpism,” violent rhetoric has propelled an anti-immigrant demagogue to power. Trump, who has scapegoated immigrants; particularly of Muslim and Mexican descent has labeled them as terrorists and rapists, and has called for a wall along the US, Mexico boarder, as well as calls for a ban on Muslims entering the United States. His rhetoric which has resulted in growing anti-immigrant sentiment is likely to lead to sanctuary cities, which are jurisdiction “that limit their cooperation with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE)” (Mazorati 1) losing federal funding, for not complying with immigration laws. The effects of this on the urban fabric of America can be drastic, as immigrants are often the driving force of metropolitan economies, providing cities with new jobs, and population growth. Unfortunately, due to changing demographics in the United States, there has been a rise in nativist sentiment as many Americans feel they are losing the demographic and economic power-hold on US society. To put in perspective, the scope of the demographic changes between 1970 and 2000 the Mexican population of the United States grew from 5.5 million to 17.9 million. (Judd, Swanstrom 141) While the rate of immigration from Mexico and other Latin American countries has leveled off since the great recession from an annual growth rate of 4.4% before 2007 to 2.8% since (Stepler, Hugo Lopez 1) attitudes towards immigrants has generally worsened, especially in the past year, with the rise of Donald Trump. Given that these feelings continue to permeate through United States society the city’s will likely suffer from tougher immigration laws over the course of the next decade. Moreover, sanctuary cities including Chicago, Los Angeles, New York and San Francisco stand to potentially lose billions of dollars per year, as it is probable legislation will pass to bar sanctuary jurisdictions from obtaining federal grants. (Mazorati 1) This accompanied by a restricted net-flow of immigrants into the cities either, due to federal policy or potential immigrants becoming worrisome of their fate under a Trump administration is likely to have a largely negative impact on cities’ economies. (Redden 1) Consequences of this could be tremendous as this would severely drain the city’s of talented young individuals, whom enter the workforce, and contribute greatly to the economies of cities, increasing the education attainment, income levels, and the overall human capital of city’s. This pertains to all cities with sizeable young and educated immigrant communities, such as in Charlotte, Raleigh, and Durham, which make up the Research Triangle in North Carolina. Here, educated immigrants flow in and participate in research at universities, including Duke and University of North Carolina, creating jobs, innovating, and reinvigorating the economy. If Cities, such as those that make up the Research Triangle stand to lose their pool of educated immigrants under Trump, the economy would suffer, as jobs in the areas of science and mathematics would diminish greatly, stunting growth, innovation, and human capital, in many US
