‘American President’ Analysis Paragraph
Although all American citizens are being influenced that President Shepherd is unfit to do his job, he successfully convinces them that he is indeed fit to re-run for President through his use of pathos and ethos. The President does use pathos the most, accessing all citizens’ emotions and sense of patriotism to convince them to re-elect him. For example, when summarizing all of Rumson’s horrible actions, President Shepherd says “[...] you go on television, and you call her a whore” (Sorkin). President Shepherd’s use of the word ‘whore’ reveals his effective use of pathos, as shown by the reaction of our class, along with the audience’s stifling silence. His actions spark a sense of patriotism throughout all US citizens, effectively gaining their support for his re-election, along with quashing any doubt about his ability to be the President. Lastly, after successfully addressing all of the slander against him in his efforts to persuade his audience for re-election, President Shepherd says “My name is Andrew Shepherd and I am the President” (Sorkin). While this is said at the end of the speech, it is crucial in President Shepherd’s establishment of his credibility in re-running for President. His use of such authority and his saying that he ‘is’ the President reveals a strong and very effective use of ethos, showing the audience how eligible he is to be re-elected for presidency. This use of ethos re-establishes the confidence in every citizen and shows them who they should be voting for to be the next President.
