A Career In Criminal Law

To become a criminal lawyer there are certain criteria’s that must be met, like the education requirements, skills and personality traits associated with the position. One must complete an undergraduate degree from a 4-year university or college. Potential criminal lawyers may benefit from courses such as government, history, economics, public speaking and sociology, but these aren’t required to see how most 4-year institutions offer a pre law major. It is also very important that individuals that plan to pursue a career in law maintain very high grades because law school is extremely selective. Once enrolled in law school, students will then complete a 3 year program that combines courses in criminal law and practice experience; many of these programs also include internships. Criminal law classes typically cover working with evidence, research, writing, ethics in criminal law and litigation strategies. (www.study.com). Upon completion of law school, graduates receive a Juris doctor (J.D.) and are eligible to take the state bar exam. This exam is given twice a year but students must pass a character evaluation and background test before granted admission to the bar. Lawyers are required to pass this exam in the state they plan to practice law. In addition, training for prospective criminal lawyers may include clinical programs, allowing students to work in the school’s legal clinic and provide free legal advice to and services to students, under the supervision of the program professor. Many law schools provide other training options in which students work directly with a law professor or experienced lawyer, such as through internships, mock trials or writing for school’s law journal. Students seeking additional experience may also secure a part-time job as a law clerk or research assistant. One must be able to communicate clearly on paper and face to face. The possession of outstanding communication skills will help one articulate ideas as well as advice to clients. Displaying pro-activity can benefit aspiring lawyers because law firms looks for individuals that aren’t afraid to take the initiative. Lastly, paying attention to detail is vital for lawyers and/or aspiring lawyers. A simple misplaced word has the potential change the outcome for a client. America is built on the sound belief that everyone is presumed innocent until proven guilty and it is because of these individuals that Americans receive a fair trial without bias. Lawyers are also lawmakers, their influence in society doesn’t go unnoticed. I’m interested in becoming a criminal lawyer because I like to help people. I also like the idea of having a stable career with a high paying salary and a passion of working alone. I’m also very interested in this career because I enjoy defending ideas on an intellectual level. The reward for making a difference in the lives of clients and people everywhere is what makes this career so longing. I am also interesting in eventually owning and opening my own law firm, so I have the ability to set my own hours and take cases that interest me. As a lawyer I will constantly learn new things as well as have a knowledge of the law. These things will benefit my life
