Playing at the college level can carry a price tag that is generally detrimental to most families across the world. As big colleges try to give their athletes this ideal recognition and exposure through television and media, the monetary side effects can be expensive for the college to keep a revolutionized and exceptional staff, facilities, and equipment. In the end, these extreme expenses will be compensated through the students and athletes efforts, and most of these athletes will not have a professional contract to pay if off. Even with some student athletes getting scholarships to cover tuition, “many student-athletes are of low socioeconomic status and have to take out large loans to pay for living expenses during college”(“College Athletes Are Not Immune To America's Student Debt Dilemma”). These athletes are persuaded this theory of free recognition and exposure to the world of professional scouts that will ultimately lead to their future success. Sadly, this exposure is not technically free, and most of these athletes will be stuck with no job and immense debt post college. These athletes are not paid, and never had any sources of money during school to pay the debt off due to their rigorous schedule. When first discovered, these societies seem revolutionary and exceptional, but when the doors are opened to their flaws and failures, slowly their utopian society will dwindle away. These societies like the one in 1984, decept their inhabitants they are living in this perfect world where nothing could be better but, “perhaps the greatest utopia would be if we could all realize that no utopia is possible”(Carroll). Similarly, the life of a college athlete is perceived to be this enjoyable and brilliant experience as they journey towards their dream, but now that the college’s flaws are exposed, these athletes lives are not idolized as much anymore. The dystopian qualities college athletes face tend to have a heavier effect on their journey than the utopian qualities of their lives, which is bitter, but accurate. Although this was not the ideal intention of these athletes, their lives are exposed to an arduous and demanding dystopian life. Societies such as the one in 1984, and the one of college athletes are simply a misconception of a perfect utopian world, when truthfully as the doors are opened to their dystopian qualities, these worlds could never be considered to be perfect.
