Each Bolivian music type and typical dance has a specific purpose and meaning. Bolivian music styles vary from one region to another. Caporal seems to be the most popular Bolivian music type and dance around the world. The word caporal means ranch manager or foreman in Spanish. Costumes are worn and meanings of the dance are different. This traditional dance parodies the mulatto overseers who managed the large Colonial haciendas on behalf of their owners. The whip and the clothing was traditionally used by the landowners are part of the dance costumes. Another music type and dance is Diablada, which means devil in Spanish. There are different styles among the men and women. Bolivian clothing in the Highlands and Valleys is conquered by the Empire. Some of those departments included La Paz, Potosi, and Oruro. The clothing was colorful and women wore rectangular tunic. It was long and hung all the way down to their ankles with a belt tied around the waist. The men also wore it but theirs were shorter. They wore ojotas, which are sandals made from strips of leather. They wore capes made out of alpaca fiber during the winter. Tocados, which are headdresses, was used to cover their heads decorated with gold, feathers, gems, and fleece earflaps.
