Personal Narrative: Multi-Color Internship

Improved Essays
At the beginning of this journey I thought majoring in accounting would be the perfect major for me. Therefore interning at Multi-Color Corporation, I thought would be the perfect opportunity. Multi-Color is a label company that prints over 10 million labels a day. There are over 45 different plants all around the world and the Scottsburg plant usually produces the most sales. The accounting department basically keeps the company running. Without the accounting department bills would not get paid or bills would not get mailed out for the customers to pay. At Multi-Color there are four main accountants: Accounts Payable (Melissa Campbell), Accounts Receivable (Tiffany Lowe), Cost Accountant (Jeremy Hafer), and Accounting Coordinator (Shari Schmidt). Some of the tasks we decided would be good for me to do at the beginning of my internship would be to learn the AP Process, AR Process, Job Cost Process, and lastly learn how to close jobs. Over my 13 weeks of being at my internship, I learned a lot of useful information that will tremendously help when I start taking accounting classes in college. Some of the everyday tasks I would do at my internship was: coding freight, entering PO’s into the computer system, complete/close jobs, and learning how to bill people. Over fall break I had the opportunity to actually work a whole week at my internship. I worked for the accounts payable person and would basically do everything they would do on a normal day. This was a very unique opportunity. I was able to see how my life would be everyday if I was an accountant. On a daily basis I was told how much of a help I was. By doing some of the work the accounts would be doing is a big help to them. Some of the things I learned at school that was used at my internship. …show more content…
For example, the things I learned in my accounting class were very useful. Learning about debits and credits really helped going into my internship. Throughout my accounting class, one thing my teacher always said was, “accounting in a classroom is different than accounting in a business”. After having my internship I really see that now. Today since we have so much technology the computers do a lot of the accounting side of things. For instance, a company no longer has to fill out a journal, the computer fills out everything for them. Another class that really helped me throughout my internship was preparing for college and careers was a big advantage. While I may not have used many of the skills for actual accounting it helped to know how I should act in a workplace setting. One thing that I had a little trouble getting use to was the technology at Multi-Color. At Multi-Color they use PC’s while at the high school we use Macs. This was something I was not really used to. However, it was pretty easy to adapt since Scottsburg has made me knowledgeable in technology. Since the high school uses Macs I was also not familiar with Excel. The one thing my internship advised me to do before I get a job in accounting is to take some Excel courses. Excel is something I will use everyday in the accounting world, and I quickly learned that out. I was on Excel pretty much every other day at my internship, which made it kind of challenging in the beginning, since

As I walked into the small building, that in fact looked very enormous at the time, I began to anticipate every answer I would give to the person who interviewed me, so that to them, I would at least seem prepared. Although I had practiced my interviewing skills that very morning, I felt anxious and worried. Not knowing what to expect, many different scenarios ran through my mind, all of which weren't making my situation any better. Questions after questions were asked, all which seemed impossible for me to answer, and I felt as though I blew the whole thing. After the interview, many days passed by, and I had convinced myself that I did not get job.…

I caught myself doing certain things that I shouldn’t be doing. For example, using opinions in my documentation. For instance, saying something is “appropriate” is an opinion because what is appropriate for one person might be inappropriate for another person. During my internship experience, I learned a lot of things that I thought I knew but are misconstrued on. With that being said, I know everything must be done in decent order or this will cause chaos and lead to confusion. I also learned everything takes patience and is very time- consuming. I became frustrated, so many times and just wanted to give up, but I had to remind myself that hard times are going to come and everything is going to work out. Many times I sat on my bed crying because it seems like everything piled on me at one time.…

So far, the ultimate beneficial knowledge that this internship has brought me is the opportunity to improve my leadership ability, planning, and organizational skills. After all, as a teacher, your job is full of meticulously detailed lessons for students. The least beneficial was probably the learning part, I felt as if I was on my own to learn a large majority of the training. I’ve taught myself much of the information about the company, layout regulations, the register, and many aspects of the store. Luckily there are multiple binders with this information that is available to read.…

For example, participation in theater productions in middle school taught me individual responsibility. In a musical, each person must memorize their lines, choreography, and harmonies inside out to put on a polished show. So I learned how to budget my time so I could practice weekly for opening night. Another after-school occupation of mine, volleyball, trains me to get along with others. Playing with girls disparate from me on a high school freshman team taught me how to see past differences.…

I have done my fall internship at the same school but during the day. I feel that there is a lot I can do to support the students both academically and emotionally. During the first meeting with the counselor she expressed that being bilingual and bi-cultural will help. I know that there are not many opportunities to talk or have sessions with students, since they don’t have elective classes where I can see them, but I will try my best to be flexible with their schedules. I found out that they have a student government association, so I will try to be involved in their activities,…

The importance of an internship experience cannot be overstated. Today, employers favor prospective employees who have done not only one internship but multiple internships. A college education will serve to propel a graduate into a profession by conferring a degree, which demonstrates an academic proficiency in various theoretical and practical examples of ways that a job might be performed. An internship makes the classroom’s abstract theories and learned examples concrete by placing the student in a real life work situation with real live co-workers performing actual professional tasks, which the job encompasses. Therefore, the payoff of an unpaid internship is that you will gain invaluable professional experience, where you might…
