ECM
95% is cartilage
5% is Ground substance - GAGS CARTILAGE IS AVASCULAR, supplied by perichondrium |
Hyaline Cartilage
Nose, tracheal rings, costal cartilages, bone surfaces, fetal skeleton, epiphyseal growth
Type II Cartilage -Have appositional and interstitial growth -bad regeneration - leaves scar Function: cushion, structure, shock absorber |
Perichondrium
Is connective tissue covering,
Outer Layer -containing type 1 collagen, fibroblasts and BV Inner Layer - source of chondroblasts NO Perichondrium at joints |
Chondrocytes
Are matured chondroblasts located in lucanue of cartilage. Mitotic division leads to group of 4-8 chondrocyte reffered to Isogenous groups or cell nest.
Capsular matrix - (matrix adjacent to the chondrocyte) is poor in collagen but rich in glycosaminoglycans
Territorial matrix- matrix found around Isogenous groups. Inter territorial matrix – matrix inbetween isogenous groups |
Matrix
Sulphated groups present in GAGs, make it hydrophilic, enabling easy diffusion of nutrition to the cells.
Presence of proteoglycans provide immense strength to the matrix so that cartilage can function as a model for bone formation. |
Appositional Growth
Appositional growth occurs from chondrogenic cells in the perichondrium differentiating into chondroblasts, forming a new layer of cartilage around the periphery of the existing cartilage.
Interstitial Growth
Interstitial growth (growth from within) occurs only in young cartilage from cell divisions within the cartilage.
This process increases the length of the cartilage |
Throxine and Testosterone
Increases Interstitial Growth
Hydrocortisone and Estradiol
Decrease Interstitial growth
Articular cartilage
Hyaline cartilage at joints which do not contain perichondrium.
Elastic Cartilage
Ear, auditry canal, ear tube, epiglottis
Type II collagen and ELASTIC FIBERS NEVER CALCIFIES Matrix identical to hyaline, but contains elastic fibers Support and flexibility |
Fibrocartilage
Invertebral disc (annulus fibrosis), attachment of ligament to bone, articular discs, pubic symphysis
TYPE I Collagen but does contain Type 2 GAGS - mainly chondroiti ONLY INTERSITIAL GROWTH - NO PERICHONDRIUM SUPPORT and tensile strength |
Cartilages
