Why are guidelines used?

Allows crews to retrace steps and for new crews to get to scene of operations quickly/easily

What are the two types of guidelines and what are their purpose?

Main guideline - from an entry point


Branch guideline - for searching off a main guideline

What are the key points of a guideline?

- 60m long


- snap hook at running end, identity disc on D ring (serial number, year of issue)


- other end has 150mm loop (plastic sleeve with serial number, year of issue)


- tans along length to indicate way out


- carried in yellow bag


- Main guidelines marked A or B, branch guidelines marked 1,2,3,4

When are guidelines tested?

- on acceptance


- after use


- 6 monthly


- annually by PEG

When should guidelines be used?

Where no other means for tracing escape route exist (hose lines submerged, complex lay out)

When would you use branch guidelines?

- When need to search more than 6m (personal line) from main guideline


- to go into HX foam

What procedures must be implemented before using guidelines?

- Only used on IC’s instructions


- Stage 2 entry control procedure


- Only one main guideline along single route from ECP


- maximum 2 main and 4 branch guidelines from single ECP


- Cannot extend branch guidelines


- Teams working on guideline must be told if branch guideline has been laid behind them


- tallies attached to D section of snap hook

What is method one?

Team leader attaches to guideline and other members attach to wearer in front

What is method 2?

All team members hook personal line on to guideline

What are the advantages and disadvantages of method 1?

Advantage - only leader needs to negotiate a tie off point


Disadvantage- not suitable for restricted access (ladders, stairs)

What are the advantages and disadvantages of method 2?

Advantage- all wearers attaches to guideline, good for obstacles, ladders/stairs


Disadvantage - all wearers negotiate tie off points, slow progress
