The Chiefs Petty Officer Academy (CPOA) has a way to improve and fulfill a possible lapse in my leadership ability. The CPOA enriches the lives of the enlisted leaders of their services through facilitated involvement. Throughout this essay I will show this involvement by sharing with you how an unexpected visitation from a former Master Chief Petty Officer of the Coast Guard (MCPO-CG), stress management, and the intermediate ropes enriched our leaders. It is in the unexpected that great things happen. An unexpected visitation from the former MCPO-CG Vince Patton, on a day that changed lives in the Coast Guard and the world. Stress management was always something that I said I did by taking on more work. I am a person that thrives under pressure; I believe that my stress drives me to be a better supervisor and employee. Through this class I have realized, that I need to understand my stressors and try to reduce my stress in effective ways discussed during this facilitation. This class showed that I am currently in a burnout phase in my personal and professional life. In this facilitated lecture, the instructor showed me that when I become less stress in one area of my life, it allows me to have less stress in other areas. I also exercised my own inclination to be the leader and speak up, I sat back and allowed others to lead, but would interject my input when needed. I believe this activity allowed me to develop my ability of letting others help me and understanding as said before that I need others, and to not always be the loudest person in the room. To allow others to lead because they may have a better idea, allows me to become a better leader. The ropes course allowed me to explore different aspect of myself and embrace the possibilities that come with the idea of the team. This once again reflects back onto what MCPO-CG said in his visit to our class, what should have took over a week to complete took just one day because of teamwork.
