Geography |
The science that studies relationships between natural systems, geographic areas, society, cultural activities, and the interdependence of all of these over space |
Why is geography holistic? |
Geography looks at a problem from all angles; it assumes that everything is interconnected |
System |
Any ordered, interrelated set of things and their attributes, linked by flows of energy and matter, distinct from the surrounding environment |
What are sunspots? |
Sunspots are caused by magnetic storms on the sun. They have an activity cycle of 11 years, and the active areas around them can experience ejections of energy that go to earth, warming it |
What is the winter paradox? |
The shorter the day length, the less energy we receive so the coldest day should be Dec 21st because it is the shortest. However, the actual coldest day is Jan 19th. This is true because on Dec 21st the northern hemisphere is covered in ice, which cools the surface continuously until Jan 19th. |
Primary air pollutant |
Already a pollutant when it leaves its source |
Secondary air pollutant |
Primary pollutants that react with each other to form a new substance |
Aphelion |
When earth is at furthest point away from the sun |
Perihelion |
When earth is closest to the sun |
Heat: Conduction |
Molecule to molecule transfer |
Heat: Convection |
Energy transferred by movement (vertical) |
Heat: Radiation |
Energy travelling through air or space |
Heat: Latent |
Phase changes |
Temperature controls |
- Latitude - Altitude/Elevation - Cloud cover (albedo) - Land-water heating differences |
High pressure |
Descending, diverging |
Low pressure |
Ascending, converging |
Coriolis force |
Deflection of a moving body (Northern hemisphere right, Southern hemisphere left) |
