Weathering definition and categories

Breakdown of rock by rainwater, temperature, and biological activity. Physical and chemical

List and describe four types of mechanical weathering

1. Water carving rock

2. Heating and cooling cycle

3. Forest fires can weather ground rocks

4. Tree roots growing through a sidewalk

Discuss the role of water in chemical weathering

Water acts as a solvent to dissolve, transport, and deposit minerals from one location to another

Weathering definition

The breakdown of rocks by action of rainwater, extreme temps, and biological activity

Mass wasting definition

Slope movement. Landslides or mudflows

Erosion

A process that removes rock from one location and moves it to another

Mechanical weathering

The process of degradation due to temperature. Sometimes assisted by water

Chemical weathering

Degradation caused by water reacting with stone to form clay

Frost wedging definition

Degradation causes by repeated freezing and thawing of water in a rocks cracks

Sheeting definition

Exfoliation. The process of degradation caused by stripping layers of rocks from a large rock mass

Exfoliation dome

Large, round, smooth dome caused by the unloading and expansion of rock.

Joint

Two sections of rock that moved away from each other

Salt Crystal growth

Weathering caused by the evaporation of water in rock cracks that leaves behind salt crystals

Biological activity

Change caused by living things like tree roots and bacteria

Dissolution

Minerals being dissolved in water

Oxidation

The exposure of a material to oxygen that causes chemical reactions in the material

Hydrolysis

The breakdown of materials when combined with water

Spherical weathering

Weathering that occurs to joined bedrock resulting in spherical weathered bedrock

Difference between mechanical and chemical weathering

Mechanical weathering doesn't involve the breakdown of rock on a molecular level

Types of mechanical weathering

Fracturing and abrasion

Types of chemical weathering

Oxidation, carbonation, hydrolysis, and dehydration

How does climate affect weathering

Extreme climates will weather rocks faster than milder climates
