What is the limbic system? |
The "emotional brain" goes through the thalamus into the cerebrum. Consists of the diancephalon (epithalamus, thalamus, hypothalamus & ventral thalamus and the 3rd ventricle). Controls visceral functions through the ANS and the endocrine system and is involved in emotions and memory. Amygdala- rage and fear Hippocampus- neurons do mitosis here. |

What is CVA? |
Cerebrovascular accident (medical term for stroke) is damage to the brain from an interruption of its blood supply. Blockage or rupture of a blood vessel. Includes muscle weakness on one side of the body, speech difficulties, side of the face droops or feels numb. |

What are Coup and Contrecoup brain injuries? |
In a traumatic brain head injuries, Coup injuries occur under the site of impact with an object. Countercoup injuries occur on the side opposite of the area that was hit. |

What is a concussion? |
Also called MTBI (mild traumatic brain injury) is a brain injury caused by a blow to the head or a violent shaking of the head and body. Symptoms may include headache, confusion, nausea and vomiting. |

What is hydrocephalus? |
A buildup of fluid in the cavities (ventricles) deep within the brain. Causes headaches, and enlarged head in infants. Adults may experience impaired vision and cognitive difficulties. |

What is a cerebral aneurysm? |
Also called intracranial aneurysm, is a weakness in a blood vessel in the brain that balloons and fills with blood. Sudden severe headache with ruptured aneurysm. Unruptured aneurysm usually causes no symptoms. |

Whats the difference between subdural hemmoraghes (hematoma) and epidural hemorrhages? |
Subdural- under the dura. Bleeding occurs between the dura and the arachnoid matter. This is the worst compared to epidural. Epidural- above the dura. Bleeding occurs between the skull and the dura matter. * layers go in order as : Skull Dura mater Arachnoid |
