The American Association of Neurological Surgeons (AANS), states that TBI is “…an injury to the brain that results in temporary loss of normal brain function. It usually is caused by a blow to the head. In many cases, there are no external signs of head trauma.” The lifelong effects from concussions are far worse than anyone anticipated with recent studies. The long term effects experienced from concussions do not show up immediately after the short term symptoms are gone. The long term symptoms are commonly known as Post-Concussion Syndrome, as mentioned in High School Athletes and Concussions, “However, some athletes may suffer from Post-Concussion Syndrome, in which symptoms linger… Long-term symptoms, which sometimes appear much later, can include depression, mood disturbances and increased sensitivity to light and sound. In more serious cases, concussion victims may develop cognitive (mental) difficulties such as memory and concentration problems. The severity and duration of such symptoms varies from case to case.” Those are the more common symptoms that come with Post-Concussion Syndrome. That is a huge aspect of sports, but it also gives the opportunity for youth to be in a good and positive environment. Having this environment helps the athlete’s motivation to be at the fullest potential. In the article The Effects of Motivational Climate on Youth Sport Participants, it says, “Research indicates that practice structures and coaches’ behavior during training and games can affect the salience of a particular goal orientation and lead to its adoption.” This is indicating that the athletes are highly impressionable and will follow the leader. But as Coach Vince Lombardi would say, “A man can be as great as he wants to be. If you believe in yourself and have the courage, the determination, the dedication, the competitive drive, and if you are willing to sacrifice the little things in life and pay the price for the things worthwhile, it can be done.” Athletes can have the best or worst environment for motivation but what it comes down to is the athletes own will to make it
