Once implemented, however, the potential for manufacturer profit, as well as savings at the consumer level and for the environment, far outweigh the cost of refitting manufacturing. The proof of concept utilizes a multiple input gearbox to power the generator. An internal combustion diesel motor drives the first input. To add to the fuel economy benefits of diesel, a 3000W electric motor drives the secondary input. A 372 cell, lithium-ion battery powers the electric motor, which subsequently charges the generator during operation of the diesel motor. When demand for electricity falls below 10,000KwH, the diesel motor will automatically shut-off, and be simultaneously replaced by the electric motor. The electric motor will operate until the battery reaches 15 percent capacity, then the diesel motor reengages the drive input. During electric operations, glow plugs in the diesel motor initiate an ignition source when lithium battery capacity reaches 20 percent, as determined by an internal thermostat.
