1. What is a wave?
A wave is a chain of vibrating molecules. In general, a wave transfers energy from one place to another.
2. Can sound move through outer space?
There is matter in outer space, it’s not the vacuum people say it is. It contains a few hydrogen atoms per cubic meter. So, if there is a sound, the sound can travel or move through the matter that is present. There are gases in space …show more content…
1. Record your observations.
I noticed that the more water the cup held, the lower the pitch produced. The highest pitch came from the cup with the least water. The cup with the least amount of water produced the loudest sound, and the sound lasted the longest. The cup with the most water had the lowest sound, which didn’t have a very long duration. When there is more water in the cup, there would be a lower amount of vibrations and a lower sound.
2. Why do you think each cup sounds different?
Each cup sounded different because the sound waves traveled through the water, and by changing the amount of water in the cup, the sound waves changed as well. Liquids with different densities will produce different sounds since the sound waves travel through them in different speeds. A cup with more volume produces a lower sound, and vise versa. So, as you change the amount of liquid in a cup, the pitch is different.
