St. John Baptist de La Salle +JMJ+ Saint de La Salle was born in Reims, France on April 30, 1651. De La Salle’s parents are Louis de La Salle and Nicolle de Moet de Brovillet. He is the oldest of seven children, four brothers and two sisters. His full name is Jean Baptiste de La Salle. He was named after John the Baptist. When he was a child, he decided to become a priest. At age eleven, De La Salle received the tonsure. And at age fifteen, he became a canon of the Cathedral Chapter in Reims. On July 10, 1669, he took the degree of Master of Arts. At age twenty, his parents died. De La Salle decided to return home and educate his brothers and sisters. He completed his studies and was ordained into the priesthood on April 9, 1678. Two years later, he received the Doctorate of Theology. In the 17th century, education was mostly for the rich and wealthy. The lack of education for the poor concerned De La Salle. He helped the Sisters of the Child Jesus, home for sick and poor girls. Then de La Salle came into contact with wealthy people, urging him to build a similar orphanage for boys. He met a lay teacher, Arien Nigel, and doors opened to homes and schools alike. Another institution was set up in the diocese because John was so successful. He devoted his life and energy to the cause of the education of the poor. But he needed a lot of teachers to teach in the schools, so he invited them into his own house.
