Walter was Martha’s first older brother. Walter was a law professor at Columbia University (“Biography--Martha Gellhorn, 2016”). Alfred was Martha’s younger brother and the youngest of the Gellhorn children. Alfred was an oncologist and former dean at a university (“Biography-- Martha Gellhorn, 2016”). Marthas brothers both became successful men in life. All of the Gellhorn children lived successful lives. Martha attended one college before she decided to become a journalist. After high school, Martha joined Bryn Mawr College in 1926. Soon after Martha joined Bryn Mawr, she soon left the graduate program to pursue journalism. When Martha quit Bryn Mawr College she did not think she would be writing on the front lines of wars. Sometimes you start on a path and realize that the path you wanted to take is not the path for you anymore and that is how Martha felt. Martha was married three times in her life. Martha’s first marriage in 1933 to Bertrand de Jouvenel who was a writer which ended in divorce. Martha also married Ernest Hemingway a famous writer of his time, he was Martha’s second husband and marriage that ended in divorce. Martha felt that she was living through Hemingway (Lyman, 1998).
