What req'ts must be met on Win 98 client computers to upgrade to XP Pro using RIS server?
-Computers must use PXE based boot ROM;
-Computers must use RIS boot disk w/ network adapter that supports PXE.
How can you create an answer file w/out using Setup Manager?
You can edit or create answer files with any text editor.
What client options are included with Remote Installation?
-Automatically setting up the computer;
-Customizing the setup of the computer;
-Restarting a previous setup attempt;
-Performing maintenance or troubleshooting.
Discuss Remote Installation Services
RIS is new tech introduced with Win 2000 allowing remote installation. RIS server installs XP Pro on RIS clients that have a Pre-Boot Execution Enviornment (PXE) network card or use a RIS boot disk generated w/ rbfg.exe. RIS is a good choice for automatic deployment of large numbers of PXE compliant clients.
What command do you use to configure RIS server to use RIS to install XP Pro in multiple computers?
RISETUP
What are types of images an RIS server can be configured with?
Two types of images:
-A CD based image containing the XP Pro OS for which you create an answer file to respond to the setup programs configuration prompts;
-A RIPrep image based on a preconfigured computer, containing the XP OS and applications.
List advantages of using RIS for automated installation.
-Can remotely install XP Pro;
-Simplifies mgt of server images allowing access to XP distribution files and use of P&P hardware detection at installation;
-Can quickly recover the OS in event of failure;
-XP security is retained when destination computer is restarted.
What are the three options for automated deployment to install XP Pro on multiple computers.
- Remote installation
- Disk imaging (cloning)
- Unattended installation
How do you create a disk image?
Install XP Pro on source computer configured as you want to copy; Use Sysprep Tool to prepare disk image for disk duplication.
How do you and why would you create an answer file?
Create answer files thru the SETUPMGR Utility. Easily done thru GUI reducing errors; it simplifies addition of user/computer specific configuration; can include application setup scripts; creates distribution folder to be used for installation files.
What are the minimum RIS server hardware requirements?
Pentium 133 MHz
128 MB memory
Two disk partitions (one for the OS and one for RIS images)
A network adapter installed.
Discuss Disk Imaging aka disk duplication.
Disk imaging is the process of creating a reference computer for automated deployment which has XP Pro installedd and is configured w/ settings and applications that should be installed on target computers.
What other program can be used to create an answer file to use RIS besides a text editor?
Setup Manager (SETUPMGR) is used to create unattended answer files.
Can you configure disk imaging so that the drive is not removed?
Yes. The reference computer is booted to an image boot disk. The image is labeled and uploaded to a remote server. You boot the computer w/ the image boot disk and download the selected image from a menu when the image is required.
The RIS server is configured to specify how client computers will be installed and configured. What optoins can the Administrator configure for client computers?
-Define the OS installation options based on access permissions from the ACL;
-Define automatic client-computer naming format;
-specify the default Active Directory location; -Pre-stage client computers thru Active Directory so only clients can access the RIS; Authorize RIS servers so unauthorized RIS servers can't offer RIS to clients.
How do you prepare the computer prior to disk imaging?
Use System Preparation Tool (Sysprep) utility to prepare the computer prior to imaging using third party image software or using the prepared computers hard drive with the disk duplicator hardware. Then remove the drive w/ the image and insert it in disk duplicator to copy the image.
List three of the requirements for configuring a RIS server?
Remote installation folder must be NTFS version 5 or later; You need to configure RIS server through the RISETUP command; The DHCP server must be authorized thru the Active Directory.
The remote installation folder can't be on the system partition when you configure RIS.
When is unattended installation a practical method of automatic deployment and what is required?
Unattended installation works well for a large number of clients and the computers are not PXE compliant. Use a distribution server to install XP Pro on target computers or use an XP Pro CD with an answer file on floppy.
What network services are required to be running on the RIS server?
TCP/IP installed & configured
A DHCP server
A DNS server
Active Directory to locate RIS server & RIS clients and to authorize RIS clients and manage RIS Configuration settings and client install options.
When is disk imaging a good choice for automatic deployment?
Disk imaging is a good choice for automatic deployment when you have the hardware that supports disk imagin and a large number of computers with similar configuration requirements.
To convert FAT32 to NTFS during unattended installation, which options should be used to create an UNATTENDED.TXT file?
You can configure the answer file to automatically convert FAT16/32 partitions during the installation. To convert the drives, add the following entry to the UNATTENDED.TXT: [Unattended]FileSystem=ConvertNTFS
In addition to Support for hardware/storage devices, hardware abstraction layers and P&P devices, what options can be configured through an answer file?
-Set passwords for local user accounts and forcing password change; -Set options for language/multilingual support and time zone config; -Configure display settings and file systems to convert FAT16/32 to NTFS at install;
-Install apps at GUI mode phase of Setup or at first user log on using Windows Installer service
What are the RIS client installation options?
-Automatically setting up the computer;
-Customizing the setup of the computer;
-Restarting a previous setup account;
-Performaing maintenance or troubleshooting.
How to you access the Setup Manager utility?
Extract the Windows XP Deployment Tools from the XP Pro CD.
What configurations options must the RIS client support?
A PXE based boot ROM chip
Net PC/PC 98 standard for PCs (industry standard components)
Network adapter supporting PXE that can be used w/ RIS boot disk.
What type of files can you use with an application that does not have MS Installer files to install it thru Windows Installer packages?
ZAP files are used if you don't have MSI files to install applications using their native setup programs.
After upgrading a program thru Windows Installer packages using group policy, what is required to ensure the latest version of software is installed on all client computers?
-Specify that upgrade is mandatory;
-Ensure the newest version of the application is listed at the top of the GPO. If you want to require all users to use teh most updated software, configure teh upgrade as madatory. The newest version of the software should be listed at the top of the GPO.
Windows Installer packages work with applications that are one of the following types:
Microsoft Installer (MSI) format files;
Repackaged applications (MSI files) that do not include native Windows Installer pkgs
ZAP files if you do not have MSI files (for apps using their native Setup program)
To use disk image, what requirements must the source and target computers meet?
Both computers: able to use same hard drive controller driver; have same HAL (same processor type).
Installation partition > smallest space image will occupy. P&P devices do not need to match as long as drivers are available.
List three of the advantages RIS automated installation?
XP Security is retained upon restart; P&P hardware detection is used during installation; You can quickly recover the OS in the event of a system failure. NO unique information is stripped out of the installation image when you use the System Preparation Tool to create a disk image.
Which utility would you use to configure the RIS server to respond to client requests if you suspect it has not been configured to respond to client requests?
You enable RIS servers to respond to client requests thru Active Directory, Users and Computers. In the Remote Install tab of the RIS server Properties dialog box, enable the option Respond to Client Computers Requesting Service.
Which Windows XP utility can you use in conjunction with third party imaging software to create disk images?
Sysprep. Once you have a reference computer installed, you can use the Sysprep utility to prepare the computer to be used with disk imaging.
Which Sysprep command line switch should you use to clone a reference computer and then compy the clone to all machines without creating a SID on the destination computers?
The -nosidgen switch prevents SID generation.
What would cause an error during a RIS installation that results in not completing installation to all client computers?
The DHCP server does not have enough IP addresses to allocate the RIS clients. To access the RIS server, the RIS clients must be able to access the DHCP server. Each RIS client uses an IP address from the DHCP server's scope, so ensure the DHCP server has enough addresses for the RIS clients.
Which services must be running on network to support the use of Windows Installer packages to install an application abc.msi?
Active Directory. You must have Active Directory installed to use Windows Installer packages.
