What is Feminist Theory?

A critique of patriarchy and capitalism


- Toward the creation of a new (egalitarian) social order based on the knowledge created by and for women and our gendered (male, female, intersex) relations.



What is the GOAL of Feminist Theory?

Transforming the ideological structures that limit the equality of women in terms of access and resources.


- With a focus on SOCIAL constructions: Class, race, ethnicity, sex, gender, religion, socioeconomic status


- And 'common sense' knowledge: That is based largely on the MYTH of TRADITION

Structural (Functional) Model
Frames our understanding of the arrangements of patriarchal, capitalist society
Social Action (Conflict) Model
Guides our critique of the barriers to equal access to resources: class, race, ethnicity
Symbolic Interactionism
A social action theory that uses hermeneutics (understanding meaning) to suggest that modern society is a social construction
Feminist Scholarship

Is concerned in some way with:


- The relevance of social structure to the lives of women and men, boys and girls


- The ways that race/ ethnicity, class, sexualities, cultures, able-bodiness, and age shape their experiences


- How people make sense of their experiences

Feminism is....

Knowledge created by and for women and gender relations that:


- Critique of patriarchy and capitalism


- A way to identify barriers to equal access to resources for women and gender relations with the goal of removing them including:


- Patriarchal structures, norms, and historical myths


-Social constructions and 'common sense'

Goal of Feminism
A new egalitarian social order. Equal access to resources. Equal pay. University education- programming in women and gender studies. Legal protections. Control over reproductive health. On a global scale.
1st Wave Feminism
Argued for equal rights under the law to vote, own property, have custody of children, enter into financial transactions toward independence from men as 'property' ---- Women as persons
2nd Wave Feminism
Argues that capitalism beliefs from the sexual division of labour because women perform reproductive tasks in society which allowed men to be free to enter the paid labour force and exchange their labour power for a wage
