What can smoking during pregnancy cause?

What are the effects of smoking on the baby?

- nicotine and carbon monoxide rapidly cross the placenta and concentrate in the foetus (10-15% higher)


- causes vasoconstriction which leads to reduced placental blood flow and o2 deprivation of the foetus

NRT is a lot safer than continuing to smoke (recommended that you use the lowest dose to relieve withdrawal symptoms e.g. lozenges or gym, but can use patch if really needed!)
