Theory - The New Right Charles Murray Harry Benson (2006) Amato (2000) |
Argue that there is only one correct family and that is the nucelar family. Couples should perform 'instrumental' and 'expressive' roles. They see lone parent - families as unnatural and harmful. Lone parent families are a burden on the welfare state. They believe that women should make family their first priority. See marriage as the basis for creating a stable enviroment to bring up children. Argue that family breakdown increases the risk to children. 'traditional values' need to be returned. |

Theory - Feminism Liberal Feminism
|
Argue that women's oppression is being gradually overcome through changing people's attitudes and through changes in the law such as the Sex Discrimination Act (1975). They hold the same view as Young and Willmott of the 'march to progress'. Believe that full gender equality is not yet achieved but we are closer than ever. Parents now treat daughters and sons equally than in the past.

Theory - Feminism Marxist Feminism |
Argue that the main cause of women's oppression in the family is not men, but capitalism. Women reproduce the labour force through their unpaid domestic labour, by socialising the next generation of workers and maintaining and servicing the current one. Women are a 'reserve army ' of cheap labour that can be taken on when extra workers are needed. |
|
Theory - Feminism Radical Feminism |
Argue that all societies have been founded on patriarchy. men are the source of women's oppression and exploitation. They are cause of everything. Family and and marriage are the key institution in patriarhcal society. Men benefit from Women's unpaid domestic labour. They want the patriarchal society to be overturned. The only way to achieve that is that women should live independently. |
|
Theory - Feminism Difference Feminism |
Argue that different women are affected differently, depending on the culture, ethnicity and what society they live in. |
|
Theory - Marxism
|
The main cause to inequality is capitalism. Marriage is incontestably a form of exclusive private property. The family supports capitalism. Passes on ideologies that justify inequality. Family is oppressive, it inhibits creativity. |
