Treatment- Will grow out with the nail (eating foods high in potassium will help avoid leukonychia)

Brittle nails which often vertically split, peel and or have vertical ridges
Treatment- Use a block buffer or 3-way file to smooth the roughness of the nail

Bacterial Infection

Appearance- Looks green/yellow or brown in colour
Cause- Unsanitary working environment
Treatment- Daily use of an antibacterial if the problem exists in the natural nail. If on the artificial nail, file off nail.

Fungus

Appearance- 3 types; Dermatophytes (ringworm), Yeasts, and Mold fungi
Cause- A tear in the hyponichium or eponychium can allow fungus to enter the nail bed
Treatment- Treat daily with anti-fungal topical solution. Keep infected area dry as possible, soak in epsom salts

What are the 5 symptoms of Fungal Infections

1) Nail separation of free edge to the nail bed
2) Discoloration
3) Thickening and brittleness
4) Debris
5) Odour

Onychia

Appearance- Inflamed tissue with pus that appears at the eponychium line above the matrix
Cause- Pulling at loose cuticle or breaking the skin
Treatment- Daily use of an antiseptic solution

Onycholoysis

Appearance- Nail plate lifts off of the nail bed and turns a whitish colour .
Cause- Psoriasis; hypothyroidism and reactive arthritis.
Treatment- Use a nail brush daily to keep the nail bed clean

Not a disease if present by itself

Onychomycosis

Appearance- Long yellow line within the nail
Cause- Caused by a fungus showing an infection of the skin.
Treatment- Daily use of an anti fungal treatment

Onychoptosis defluvium

Appearance- Periodic shedding of one or more nails, either in whole or in part.
Cause- May follow certain diseases such as Syphillis or can result from fever, trauma or from an adverse effect of a pharmaceutical drug. Daily use of a nail regenerating treatment (Should be monitored by a physician.

Paronychia

Appearance- Deep inflammation around the cuticle and side wall of the nail. The cuticle line will turn red and become swollen and tender.
Cause- Bad manicuring or biting. (Clients whose hands are in and out of water frequently are more at risk)
Treatment- Daily use of an antiseptic solution
