What happenened when the federal forces seized the Sea Islands off of the coast of South Carolina in Nov 1861
Vast cotton plantations but with no planters. Slaves associated their slavery with cotton crops and decided to plant what ever they wanted. Sweet potatoes and corn. The government auctioned off the land to northern investors and hired the blacks as cotton pickers.
What happened on Davis Bend?
Mississippi plantations owned by Confederate President Jefferson Davis. Davis thought if he treated slaves humanly, it would be a model society. Ulysses S. Grant leased the land to the freedmen. By 1865 the freedmen established their own government and profited 160000 in cotton sales.

Blacks were required to remain on their plantations working as laborers bound by 1 yr contracts.

Wade-Davis Bill

Black codes

Fourteenth Amendment
the gaurantor of individual civil rights. All persons born or naturalized in the US (freedmen) civil rights. Equal protection of the laws where they lived and all states not allowing rights to men and freedmen would lose representation in congress.
carpetbaggers
a term suggesting they were penniless adventurers who came south with all their possesions in a cheap suitcase or carpetbag intent on enriching themselves at the expense of the southerners. Reality was they were skilled and middle class
scalawag
the republican party contained a number of white southerners. they were considered traitors to their region and race.

Passed 1869 ratified in 1870. The right of citizens of the us shall not be denied or abridged by the us or by any state on account of race, color or previous condition of servitude
White Terrorist Associations
1866 Klu Klux Klan, White Camelia, White Brotherhood. Carpetbaggers and scalawags targetted in violence. Enforcement acts in 1970 enforced rights and arrested of klans men.
Horace Greenly
editor of the New York Tribune, once a champion for slave rights, challenged Grant to the presidency by campaigning that blacks were worthless and the whites needed to be restored to the south

Civil rights act of 1875
provide equal access in public facilities such as schools and allow blacks to serve on juries. largely ignored. 1883 the supreme court ruled it unconstitutional.
Rutherford B Hayes vs. Samuel Hayes
Mardch 2, 1977 by a vote of 8 to 7 the commission awarded all 20 disputed electoral votes to Hayes. Hayes became president.
