•The U.S wanted to prevent European nations from taking land in Western Hemisphere.



What did the Monroe Doctrine state?

•Stated that Europe was "not to interfere" in the West, and the U.S. would not interfere in Europe.

Describe Missouri Compromise


☆ Missouri applied for statehood as a slave state.



• In 1819 there were 22 states (half free and half slave)



•Admission of Missouri would upset balance in Senate in favor of slavery.



•Henry Clay, helped form compromise.



• As a Result, Maine was admitted as free state, Missouri was admitted as slave state. It divided territory along 36.33' for future statehood (North free, South open to slavery)



• Missouri Compromise was made in attempts to preserve balance and prevent future conflicts, but it didn't work.
