Albany Plan of Union

proposed by Benjamin Franklin; an attempt to create "one general government" for the 13 colonies

Treaty of Paris

1763 agreement between Britain and France that ended the French and Indian War

Proclamation of 1763

meant to protect Indians in the western lands; forbade colonists from settling west (they ignored it and went west anyway!)

Sugar Act

put new lower tax on molasses and made it easier for British officials to bring colonial smugglers to trial

Stamp Act of 1765

placed new duties on legal documents, newspapers, almanacs, playing cards, etc.

set up a government for Canada and protected the rights of French Catholics; made the American colonists even more angry

Quartering Act

law requiring colonists to provide housing, candles, bedding, and beverages to soldiers stationed in the colonies

Boston Massacre

1770 clash between colonists protesting the Quartering Act and panicked British soldiers; 5 colonists were killed, including Samuel Maverick, age 17, and Crispus Attucks, an African American sailor

wrote plays that were published in colonial newspapers that made fun of British officials, her writings helped spur colonists into action
