Why did late-nineteenth-century presidential elections tend to focus on the personalities of the candidates rather than on “real” issues?

During this time period there was nothing to disagree about because most of the political parties were were similar and had nothing to disagree about. The people could not differentiate between the candidates. During this time the Union was not undergoing a controversial issues and therefore, the candidates were on the same page and did not offer anything new for the Union. This meant that the real issues were not important because there wasn't any. The people then began to make their elections based on the personalities of the candidates because there was nothing else to base themselves off of.

Which of the following do you think was the most important issue of the late nineteenth century: the “tariffs, civil-service reform, or currency? Why?

Tariffs were an issues in this time because half of the people wanted a high tariff and the other half did not. The half that wanted a high tariff was the industrialized part: they wanted a high tariff so foreign goods would be too expensive for the Americans and they would buy the good made in America. The side that did not want a high tariff was the farming side: they did not want a high tariff because then in retaliation, foreign countries would raise their tariff and make it expensive for American goods to be exported and sold in foreign countries.Civil-service reform: This reform stated that merit was required in order to receive a job in a high position. This reform helped correct the spoils system. The people who received jobs were called “spoilsmen”. This reform came along with the Pendleton Act passed by Chester Arthur in 1883 which also came with the Civil Service CommissionCurrency: Currency was also a huge issue during this time because there was also two group of people who were on different sides. One off the sides debtors and they wanted inflation to be pursued do that it would be easier to pay their debts, this was called soft money. On the other side of the coin were wealthy people and bankers: they were in favor of hard money which would would be money backed by gold and kept the economy stable. If it was unstable they would be paid back with money of less worth than is actual worth when it was lent.

Explain the seeming paradox that at a time when successful presidential candidates were usually “bland” and “forgettable,” public enthusiasm for election campaigning was at an all-time high.

When election campaigning was at its highest peak, the "bland" and " forgettable " successful presidential candidates had sparked the public's enthusiasm to participate because in this time loyalty to your political party was extremely important. If you compare present time to past time, the majority of the time people can agree that things are better now due to all the advancements and changes. The one change that is actually worse now compared to past times was presidential election. There is a time period in which several presidents who served did not bring change to the Union and corruption was done everywhere. In presidential elections before, people were more active when it came to voting even if the candidates were not the best or were very bland and forgettable. In past elections the percentage of people voting was around 80% and now it is way less.
