Pathogen
- Organism that causes disease
- Include microorganisms and some larger organisms
- Pathogenic microbes include some bacteria and fungi, all viruses
Gas Exchange System
- Air containing pathogen breathed in, trapped by mucus lining lung epithelium cells
- Cells have cilia that move mucus up trachea to mouth where it's removed
- Some pathogens still able to reach alveoli where they invade cells and cause damage
Skin
- Pathogen enters bloodstream through cuts
- Blood clots at area of damage to prevent pathogens from entering
- some may get in before clot has formed
Digestive System
- Pathogens in food are killed by acidic conditions of stomach

Pathogens damage host cell by:
- Rupturing them to release nutrients
- Breaking down nutrients inside cell for their own use. This starves and kills cell
- Replicating inside cell and bursting them when they're released
Factors increasing risk of Coronary Heart Disease (CHD)
Poor Diet - high in saturated fat or salt
Smoking, lack of exercise and excessive alcohol intake - lead to HBP, which can damage heart and blood vessels
Factors increasing risk of Cancer
Smoking - main cause of mouth, throat and lung cancer
Excessive exposure to to sunlight - can causes skin cancer
Excessive alcohol intake - increase risk of liver cancer
