Within 2 weeks of having the electrode implanted, it is key that Zoey’s device is turned on and auditory training, speech, and language therapy begins. Auditory training is used to maximize the individual’s hearing. For infants and toddler, auditory training has to be extremely flexible. During auditory training, Zoey will have to learn to deduce meaning from from the speech signal. Since Zoey will be implanted with little language skills, sound awareness will be the first skill to work on. During this stage, the therapist can play peak-a-book, musical chairs, or march to the beat of a drum. When Zoey has master sound awareness, the therapist will work on sound discrimination. Sound discrimination activities include play a game with toy animals and make animal noises, respond to a command (“draw this”), play same and different (cat and cat, vs. cat and bat), and repeat what you hear (“ba ba ba”). Following sound discrimination is identification. Tasks for identification could include play a board game and listen for the names of colors, play with stickers and point out the images, play go fish. The final step of auditory training is comprehension. Comprehension tasks include listen to a read-aloud story, playing I-Spy and 20 questions. Since Zoey is so young, in home therapy is likely the best option for her and her family. Since Zoey is young, and her parents explained that they try not leave the house as much with her because she has meltdown, in-home therapy might cause the least amount of stress for the family. It is important to talk with the family about their therapy options to make sure you are doing what is best for their family. Later in Zoey’s journey, group therapy might be extremely affective. Group therapy for Zoey could be extremely helpful because she will be exposed to others with hearing loss and it can help her prepare for school.
