Yosef Fares

WHAT
My first interview was with Yosef Fares. He is a Head coach for Madera High School in California. He is in his second year in that position. He was a perfect person to interview because in his first his team was 0-10. And this season they made the playoffs and won in the first round. Bring them to a 6-6 season record. I found during this interview my thoughts on Leadership were not a far off as I expected them to be. I found that the emphasis on empathy was very important in Coach Fares opinion. The thing that surprised me the most was how much kindness he shows to everyone that is involved in his program. It surprised me because of his age. It seems to me the older coaches understand that piece and younger coaches are missing

He has kept moving forward in the direction that continues to make him better at being a leader. And he knows the will never be done learning and he can never learn it all.

I first thought I would be intimidated by these people. Because of how much work they have put into their lives, it has allowed them to do so much good in the lives of others. In reality, I really enjoyed these conversations. Getting the opportunity to talk with theses people about their experiences, failures, and how they overcame those to bring them to where they are today. And The eagerness of these people to share their paths was great for me to see.

I walk away knowing I have a lot to work on and a specific way I must go about it. I have to keep and improve on the idea of being a lifelong learner, as well as keeping an open mind to other paths and thoughts. I have to work harder on showing empathy towards people, but not to a point where I would be taken advantage of. If I can continue to do and improve on these things I have the chance to really create something great for myself and be able to impact the lives of others in a positive

Mopping floors, cleaning windows and vacuuming rugs. I would never have surmised that being a part-time janitor at a Veterans home would influence my character to such a great extent. His references to getting checked into the Harriet Tubman Quadrangle and the lack of food, made many draw similarities to their own Howard experiences. Due to this aspect his words meant…

When I read this aphorism it immediately clicked with me because this is something I had to learn to do to become a good leader. First impressions are paramount. They make or break the basic notions you conceive of a person's character. That is the moment when you decide whether you can either be this persons friend, tolerate them, or simply loathe them. Frankly, it is a million times easier to just ignore them and keep to yourself, although this note taking exercise has expanded my curiosity. Never have I ever taken the chance to get to know anyone from my classes as a first year college student, but Professor Straus made that a possibility.…

I think Washburn values diversity because having diversity at a university presents all kinds of thinking and reasoning strategies from different types of students. Also, there are more ways to come up with results and solutions when there is a diverse setting containing students from different backgrounds. In my opinion, I think the most important part of the WU diversity statement is the first sentence that says, “The mission of our diversity initiative is to honor the Washburn University commitment to respect, embrace, enhance and celebrate diversity at all levels of the University and surrounding communities through faculty, staff, student and administrative efforts and community partnerships.” I think this sentence is important because it is stating what the mission of diversity is at Washburn. I support the WU diversity statement because the last sentence states, “Washburn defines diversity broadly to encompass gender, race, ethnicity, socioeconomic class, sexual orientation and identity, disability, age, religion and national origin” and this greatly reflects my views on diversity.…
