Yanek Character Analysis

Decent Essays
I will be evaluating Yanek Gruener. Yanek is brave but also silent. Yanek is seen as brave for three reasons. The first reason is that one night while Yanek was sleeping his dad was leaving to go out past curfew. When the Nazis go out past curfew they are taking a lot of risks. One of the risks are that they could be caught by the German’s and get taken away to a concentration camp. While Yanek’s dad was leaving he woke Yanek up, and of course now that he was awake he was curious where his dad was going. “ Where are you going?” I asked him. “ I want to go with you!” Yanek wanted to risk his life to go outside past curfew and see what it was like outside during nighttime. Another reason Yanek is considered brave is because when there families moved up to the pigeon coop on the roof the put metal bars over the doors so nobody could come up there. …show more content…
The problem was that nobody wanted to go out there and open the door, but Yanek stepped up and went to open the door. Luckily, they gave up and left by then. The last reason Yanek is brave is because one day while they were at the first concentration camp Yanek and 2 other boys were very hungry and could barely move, they obviously could not go to work while in this condition. Yanek had an idea to hide under the floor boards till work was over then quickly before roll call crawl out of the hole back into there bunks. Everything was working out fine until the manager of the camp came in the bunks, all the boys were terrified and did not know what to do. Yanek came up with a quick plan and said that they had to quick crawl out while he was not looking and say they were sent back here to do work. Nobody wanted to speak to the leader so Yanek stood up and lied to the leader saying they were sent back to the bunks for work. Yanek is also considered silent at times when he needs to
