Wilfredo Lam was one of the most well-known Cuban artists of the previous century. Born in 1902, Lam spent his early life in Havana building a heavily academic background. He was painting by this time, but eventually decided to move to Spain in a transition to Paris so he could create works with more freedom from the rules of academics. Lam ended up staying fourteen years in Spain, considerably longer than planned. That is where the modern art movement began to influence him. During this time in 1931, tuberculosis claimed the lives of his wife and son. Many of his works are of a mother with a child as a tribute to his family. As World War II began to near closer to Lam’s location, he moved back to Cuba where his sister exposed
