Juan Marichal
Juan Marichal, former pitcher for the San Francisco Giants, was born on October 3, 1937. He also played for the Boston Red Sox and the Los Angeles Dodgers. He only appeared in one World Series game, despite winning more games than any other pitcher during the 1960s.
Marichal was born in a small village of Laguna Verde, Dominican Republic. He has two brothers and a sister. His father, Natividad Marichal, died of an unknown illness when Marichal was only three years old. Marichal worked on his farm, caring for the goats, donkeys, and horses. He is most famous for his windup, where he was able to mask the type of pitch until it was thrown. He was very successful in his career through 1969, with more than 20 victories and never earning an Earned Run Average (ERA) higher than 2.76. He, along with Sandy Koufax, was the only Major League pitchers from 1946 to present to achieve more than one season of 25 wins or more. Although he won more games during the 1960s than any other Major League pitcher, Marichal was never voted for the CY Young Award until 1970. He earned a spot in the top 10 in innings pitched eight times, top 10 in strikeouts six times, the top 10 ERA seven years in a row, and top 10 in complete games ten times. Throughout his career, he had 2,303 strikeouts and only 709 walks. Marichal is also known for an incident that occurred in a game against the Los Angeles Dodgers in 1965. During the third inning, one of Dodger catcher Johnny Roseboro’s return throw grazed Marichal’s ear. He then responded by hitting Roseboro’s vulnerable head with his bat, which required him to have 14 stitches. Marichal was kicked off the team, suspended for eight days, fined $1,750, could not attend the Giants’ final series with the Dodgers.
