Benjamin Franklin once said, “ Early to bed and early to rise makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise.” Yes, it’s scientifically proven that it’s correct. But in the quote, one word pointed that it was meant for a certain something, a “man”. It means a person who is fully grown up. But gives a totally different meaning when it comes to students. The oldest students in high school would be seniors with an average age of 18 years old. They are just teenagers. As the fact that early birds are better is proven , it’s also proven that teenagers require more times and have a different way of time use than adults. But it’s commonly known that schools start way too early than they should be, which results in the downfall of students’ health and academic. During puberty, the shifts in the sleep-wake cycle is between 11 p.m. to 9 a.m. as when they get their best sleep during at the time(Mckibben). Biological sleep patterns shift toward later times for both sleeping and waking during adolescence -- meaning it is natural to not be able to fall asleep before 11:00 p.m. (National Sleep Foundation 1). But they problem is not when the they go to sleep but when they are forced to wake up. According to National Center for Education Statistics, there are 10% of public schools that starts school earlier than 7:30 a.m. If according to that, for them to be ready for the school buses, they will have to wake up around 6:00 a.m. There is literally no way that a teen would be feeling refreshed at that time of the day. They would only feel weary, fatigued and exhausted. If so, what is the point if the students won’t be able to remember what was taught during the time? It would be totally meaningless, then. That why I believe that the school boards should start reconsidering to change the
