William Deresiewicz claims that in the neoliberal world we live in, the market mentality drives students to attend universities purely to obtain higher paying careers, rather than to expand knowledge. This article describes how students are most interested in practicing majors corresponding with the highest salary jobs: “the most popular majors are the practical, or … the commercial ones: economics, biology, engineering, and computer science.” Today, parents invest in college with hopes to make larger investments back, due to that fact that an individual’s worth in society is based on their wealth. Students no longer attend college to question and reflect on the world, but rather to rise on the social ladder. Deresiewicz believes “college is…
I was able to engage in challenging classes within the Honors association as well as expand my confidence within WILL, Women in Learning and Leadership. My perspective on each and every concept I learned kept changing and growing and altering. I learned alongside people of varying cultures, and ages, which expanded my perspective on numerous issues. I changed my major at least four or five times, and did not have to worry about wasting thousands of dollars by doing so. I am still accumulating more information and deciphering what it is exactly I want to do and who I want to be.…

Taking rigorous academic classes such as, AP and honors has allowed me to learn how to grow and become a well better…

My time as a Medical Assistant for a Dermatologist and his PA has given me the opportunity to validate my passion for becoming a PA. I have had the opportunity to provide excellent medical care to patients, but I want to be able to provide the next level of care that can be done with the education and training of a PA. I feel that Auburn University adequately prepared me to successfully endure the vigorous curriculum that a PA program consists of. Though some of my grades were lower than hoped, I was able to learn better study habits and excel in higher-level courses. I feel that becoming a PA is the right professional field for me to pursue because of my healthcare experiences thus far.…
There are many justifications as to why I decided to attend American Public University (APUS). The three main reasons: I want to be an encouragement to my children, I want a solid career foundation, plus enhancing my education will also help me to improve my own self-assurance. Establishing a positive atmosphere, and being an example of encouragement for my children is the most significant reason for my decision to attend American Public University. I know it will be a challenge, but I want my children to understand that it is easier to struggle to further your education, than it is to struggle enduring poverty from lack of a degree. American Public University can help me to realize my dreams of being an inspiration to my children.…
“Is college worth it?” this question is proposed in “College Majors, Unemployment and Earnings: Not All College Degrees are Created Equal” (Carnevale, 297). The writers of the article answer with “yes, extensive research, ours included, finds a college degree is still worth it.” Anthony P. Carnevale, Ban Cheah, and Jeff Strohl go further to explain that this is held to a different standard depending on what major you choose to pursue. The authors give statistics and percentages on unemployment rates according to major.…
Is college really worth it Every parent wants their child to have a better future than they had, its more or less the American dream for ones child to go to college to brighten their future. The only challenge holding parents back from sending their kids to college is the cost. While college debt can seem like overwhelming from time to time, college is well worth the money because it can help with one's social skills, it can create more opportunities, and by going to college one could potentially get a higher paying job after graduation. College is well worth the money because it can help with ones social skills.…
The biggest cost would be time as the workload of the class probably will be bigger than the honors class. However, I have a lot of time so the tradeoff would not matter for me. Another opportunity cost is potentially GPA because of the increased difficulty of the class, but I doubt it will be such a big problem. Thus, the benefits clearly outweigh the cost for taking this class so the result of a cost-benefit analysis says I should enroll in AP Government and…
Primarily, I wish to pursue a graduate education and therefore will be required to be accepted, and be capable of affording education after my undergraduate studies. The Honors College allows me, as a student, to ultimately receive the most education and experience during my undergraduate years, so that when I am in graduate school, I am a prime candidate, not only in school, but also in the work force. With that said, I will most likely be prepared, and financially obligated to enter the workforce. The prior experience and assistance from the Honors college, through the Praxis Labs and living and learning communities, will allow me to make connections with people and my field, so I am able to capitalize on my…

A) The only way the Hispanic community will be able to live decent lives and be adequately represented in government is if we are in positions of power. On December 18th of 2010, the 36 republican and 5 democratic senators did not have my dreams in mind. They did not understand that I don 't have a single memory of the place where I was born. In truth they will never fully know what it 's like to grow up in a country that empowers your dreams, overtakes you with its culture, just to shut you out upon the request of documents that you do not understand why you can 't provide. A college degree will inevitably increase my standard of life but it will stand for so much more. .…
The choice to study at AMU was something that I have contemplated for some time now, specifically due to the fact that I am a military spouse and AMU works so well with military and their families fairly easily. I work full time and so does my husband, along with raising a toddler, I feel as though AMU will give me the flexibility I need to complete my degree at my own pace. Since I work full time I need a school that is able to offer classes when most other schools will not offer classes due to breaks and vacations. Trying to work around the schedule of another school and the different times they offer specific courses will be quite the challenge with my already hectic schedule. I have heard many good things from other spouses about AMU and…
Motivation: The opportunity to provide for my family and feel a true sense of value for my accomplishments is what motivates me towards my degree. Purpose: My main purpose for earning my degree is gaining a valued skill set. I want to be able to be an asset wherever my life happens to take me, with a strong educational background.…
From networking to furthering your career, the benefits are endless. The only issue that students will have is the massive load of schoolwork but after researching some organizations, the benefits are worth it. Plus, it’s not like I will have a lot of obligations, if any at all. This reflection has helped me find a good organization for me to join. ASHP is a perfect fit for me because I am passionate about expanding a pharmacist’s role in health care which is one of their advocacies.…
