The obesity epidemic has become a real problem for America. Several life-threatening diseases such as heart disease and diabetes have been linked to obesity. Many thin people think that because a person is thin, that person is healthy so people continue to eat unhealthy and eat big portions of food but what people don’t know is that sometimes weight has nothing to do with health and a person can still be thin and unhealthy. Since the 1970’s, food portions have increased dramatically. There was an increase in the work force when women began to work for themselves and make their own money and as women started to work more, it became difficult to have home cooked meals prepared for families and that’s when it began. Businesses realized how to come up with something to make money and provide families with a quick meal so fast food joints were created. When it first began, the portions of food were normal, what anyone would usually have but then as the years went by, Americans’ appetites grew as the food portions grew with it. It used to be just plain burger, a small bag of french fries and a 12-ounce soda. Fast food has always been unhealthy, it’s just the portion sizes that have gotten bigger which are affecting people’s health. In David Barboza’s New York Times article, “If You Pitch It, They will Eat”, he spoke about the number of children becoming obese has increased, “Product tie-ins are everywhere. There are SpongeBob SquarePants Popsicles, Oreo Cookie preschool counting books and Keebler's Scooby Doo Cookies. There is even a Play-Doh Lunchables play set…. Since 1980, the number of obese children, has more than doubled to 16 percent, according to the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.” The food industry is advertising the food, but it is being advertised with cartoon characters or toys, so that kids will see it, want it, and then ask parents for it. Children see these advertisements on TV while watching their favorite cartoons, there are advertisements everywhere people go and there are fast food franchises on every corner so how do people not expect children to ask for those unhealthy foods. The advertising to children has increased weight and those children are the future leaders of the world. It will also affect the children’s health which is a big problem as well in today’s society.
