Rough Draft Fast food has been an ongoing epidemic for years in America. It is one of the leading contributors to obesity in America. This is a big problem for American citizens and should be a focus to people today. If fast food could be regulated more efficiently, the obesity rates in America could potentially decline. I believe that if people begin to be more aware of the threats of the fast food industry and start taking immediate action into reducing the frequent consumption of unhealthy fast foods, America can be a healthier country. I believe that David Zinczenko explained fast food and obesity very well in his essay. His ideas influenced me to see different ways of solving the problem of obesity. In David Zinczenko’s essay, “Don’t Blame the Eater”, he explains his points of view on the problems of fast food and obesity in America. His essay displays prominent facts and ideas that could be essential to the solution of this epidemic among people in this country. He explains that people are not provided with adequate information about what they are consuming when choosing to eat fast food. He states that people go into fast food restaurants blindly. Childhood obesity has been increasing significantly over the years, which means that drastic action should be taken as soon as possible. The sooner the government and American citizens start taking the proper actions to provide people with the crucial information of nutrition facts at fast food restaurants, the sooner America will become a healthier nation. I believe that Radley Balko is wrong in what he says about obesity in his essay “What You Eat Is Your Business”. Balko explains that people should be responsible for their own healthiness and the government should not be manipulating and intervening in the vast array of food options available to American consumers. I oppose his views because it is factual that many people are addicted to food. People have been responsible for their own diets for years, and yet obesity rates continue to increase. This shows that a different course of action must be taken because the previous methods are less than efficacious. Although Balko has good reasoning in his essay, I believe that his ideas would not be the best course of action for Americans. It is difficult for people to shy away from unhealthy and fast foods because they are advertised everywhere and are very available to American consumers, especially children. If the government takes small strides to progressively make food options healthier, I believe that obesity rates will indeed drop. It is obvious that American consumers will demand their favorite
