The American Psychological Society has given various examples of the benefactions that animal testing has made in society, including the understanding and treatment of bacterial infections, HIV and AIDS, cancer, and heart disease. Hearts behave similarly in animals such as pigs, sheep, dogs, and rats. Heart disease affects millions of Americans, and the study and research that developed our understanding of the heart came from animals, dogs in particular (www.the-aps.org). The UCLA has done much research involving animals, including but not limited to, breast cancer, Parkinson’s, and Alzheimer's by using rodents. Life saving treatments for many disorders and diseases are to be thanked to animal …show more content…
The author Jerrold Tannenbaum has gone and researched what pain and morality in animal testing means. He has noted on how in many experiments, the whole purpose is to see if a product is harmful and not exposing the animal to pain refutes the whole reasoning of the experiment (Tannenbaum). The experiments are deliberately made to see if a product causes harm. Same could be said with research on illnesses, because these animals have to have said illnesses to be able to be studied on. Moreover, the animals used have a significantly lower life span than humans. The American Psychology Association has stated that majority of test subjects, up to 95%, are mice, rats, and pigeons (www.neavs.org). These animals are already widely stigmatized in the general population, but people want to focus on the low minority of primates and domesticated animals that are used. Rats and mice typically only have a lifespan of 2 to 3 years, so it is easier to study the stages of life within them. The instances where primates and domesticated animals such as dogs have been used, they have made medical advancements and furthered our understanding of psychology. Additionally, there are also laws put into place to ensure the safety of animals. The Animal Welfare Act has specific regulations for animal testing, and there are inspections from veterinarians. Any animal research has to be
