Why Is Animal Testing Unethical

If asked whether they have or would ever abuse an animal, most people would wholeheartedly exclaim “no!” However, many people today buy cosmetics from brands that test on animals, and are unaware of how this simple action abuses and kills innocent creatures. Cosmetic companies should be banned from testing their products on animals because it is inhumane and an unreliable method of testing cosmetics. With moisturizing face masks and luscious lip glosses on the rise, it may be tempting to buy from well-known cosmetic companies, but most of these brands hide cruel and inhumane secrets about how they test their products. For instance, the U.S. Animal Welfare Act, which regulates animal testing, allows cosmetic companies to electrocute, burn, …show more content…
Animal testing is unsafe, due to the obvious differences between humans and animals. Therefore, results from animal testing can be inaccurate, or can yield results that differ between animals and humans. For example, a drug used in cosmetics called Fen Phen has no effect on animals, but causes heart damage to humans (“Animals in Science”). Since animal testing is an ineffective way of testing chemicals or drugs, it could potentially put many people at risk (“Animal Experimentation”). Nevertheless, humans are being harmed from dangerous and unreliable tests, while animals are dying without cause since these tests are unsuccessful. To illustrate, approximately 94% of tests that are successful on animals prove unsuccessful on humans (Mcwilliams). Animal testing not only should be banned due to its cruelty, but also because of the dangers it poses to …show more content…
However, other alternatives have been developed and proven to be more effective than animal testing (“Animals in Science”). Some alternatives to animal testing include using reconstructed human tissue, artificial bone marrow and skin, and even “microbrains” that scientists have developed from human brain cells (“Animal Testing”). Cruelty-free alternatives are significantly more accurate than animal testing because they utilize replicas or duplicates of human body parts, which are more similar to a human in real life than an animal. In fact, more cosmetic brands are switching to these new methods, instead of relying on animal testing to test their products (Howard 14, 15). This includes the popular cosmetic company called Lush Cosmetics, who claims that animal testing is unnecessary when “3-dimensional human skull models can fully replace rabbits for skin irritation testing…” In addition to being cruelty-free, they use organic ingredients including fresh fruit, herbs, flowers and vegetables (“Our Values)”. It requires no thought to choose between fresh, cruelty-free ingredients, or chemicals such as formaldehyde that can cause birth defects (Duong). Despite claims that animal testing is the only way to test cosmetic products, new methods are being discovered. Consequently, there are no excuses as to why animal testing should still be legal, when

People, especially scientists, are hurting innocent animals that did no harm to anyone. Animal testing shouldn't be allowed to happen because animals are getting hurt, they are not protected, and animals get mistreated. One reason that animal testing shouldn’t be allowed is because animals are getting hurt. For instance, the Draize eye test involves rabbits having their eyelids clipped open for as long as multiple days so that they don’t blink the product being tested away. Popular cosmetic brands like L'oreal, Lancome, Estee Lauder, and S.C. Johnson are used on animals.…

Any cosmetic or medical companies will tell consumers that their products are the best since it has been tested on animals for safety, but the truth behind animal testing will make buyers think twice about their merchandise. Nowadays, more and more people are teaming up against animal testing. Laboratory testing is done on substances that make up medication and cosmetics, such as perfume, lotion, soap, etc. Animals are used to develop medical treatments, determine the toxicity of medications, and check the safety of products destined for human use. Substances are injected into animal’s bodies to prove that products are harmless to people, and the environment.…

Harvard’s WYSS institute has come up with a solution. Instead of testing on animals, we can test on the cells inside of our body that react the same way we would. “organs-on-chips”...contain human cells grown in a state-of-the-art system to mimic the structure and function of human organs and organ systems”. Using technology like would mean that we could ditch animal testing, and start using our cells to make sure products are safe for everyday use. Tissue from human bodies will entirely replace…

This quote explains animal testing perfectly; “Many cosmetic companies test their new products and ingredients by forcing rabbits, hamsters, and mice, among others, to endure horrific practices such as breathing in poisonous fumes or having lethal chemicals poured into their eyes and rubbed into their skin”(Natasha Cole, Cruelty Free Cosmetics). Many supporters of animal testing will argue that it can have positive outcomes, however, humanity uses it in vain ways. This makes it especially wrong because humans are treating animals cruelly and inhumanely mostly to look attractive. Continuing on about cosmetic testing on animals: “Animal testing for cosmetics is an outdated practice and does not provide the most reliable results regarding the safety, performance, or possible reactions that cosmetic products or ingredients could have in a person” (Natasha Cole, Cruelty Free Cosmetics). The reason to continue these means of testing on animals proves to be no longer relevant because easier and more reliable ways of testing do indeed exist.…

There are many reasons why animal testing should be stopped. Testing on animals is inhumane because the animals are neglected all of their life, forced into these harsh experiments, they are not given pain reliever and are, if not always, killed at the end of experiments. Animals shouldn’t have to live in a cage all their life, they have a purpose on this earth just like anything else, and that purpose is not to be poked at with…

Animal testing is an unnecessary part of science that should be gotten rid of completely. Instead of sacrificing the lives of innocent animals, we should spend our time studying the cells of humans and how the product can impact someone before testing it on humans. Animals used for scientific or product testing are under an unnatural and stressful environment, one they would otherwise never come across in life, causing the animal to not react as it should. The Animal Welfare Act states that animals can be burned, shocked, and poisoned. They also state that any experiment that wants to be tested is prohibited no matter how trivial it may be.…

After studying multiple views on animal testing I have come to realize my personal view has now changed since the start of my research. Before undergoing heavy study into animal testing I believed that all types of animal testing should be stopped, but now I believe that the idea is very beneficial and should only be done when the rights of the animal are considered. In the coming years, hopefully, more regulations can be passed to ensure that all animal’s lives are protected during experimentation. Although most animals are treated with care and no pain is dealt to them when undergoing testing, it would be a lie if I stated no animals are harmed during the process. Animal testing is extremely useful in developing life-saving drugs and medicine.…

Pew Research Center found that fifty percent of all U.S adults oppose animals being used in any type of scientific tests, or research (“Cosmetic Tests That”1). So many people don’t want animal testing to happen, but so many companies do it. But even worse, people support it by buying the products that have been tested on animals. There are many companies that don’t use animals to test their cosmetics that have as good of quality as the ones that do. If many people stop buying products that are animal tested companies will eventually have to stop using animals for cosmetic testing.…
