Why Do Sharks Do Not To Kill

Sharks: To Kill or Not To Kill According to www.iflscience.com, 100,000,000 sharks are killed each year by humans; however, this is a conservative number. Scientists actually believe that 273,000,000 sharks are killed by humans in one year. In comparison, only five people are killed by sharks per year. The reasons for this injustice are often petty and selfish. Most sharks are killed for their fins which can be made into a soup. Others are killed for souvenirs and jewelry or simply because it got too close to a populated beach. Think about that idea. What would you do if thousands of aliens were in your house, otherwise known as your territory? I know I would become aggressive towards the intruders since they were in my home. So, …show more content…
In being humans, we like to eat and, unfortunately, we don’t settle for the everyday catfish or tilapia. No, we have to eat weird dishes like shark fin soup. “It is estimated that 100 to 200 million sharks annually are killed for their fins alone. This practice is mainly for supplying shark fins for the so-called delicacy known as shark fin soup (www.sharkfriends.com).” To put this information in a way you can relate to, think of it like this. You and your entire country of one hundred million people have special flesh that an alien nation loves to eat. Well, the alien nation kills off your entire country to make the certain delicacy they enjoy so much. Do you think they were right in killing your species off for food they really didn’t need? Of course not! Let me ask you this now, should we be killing 11,416 sharks an hour and a rough number of 100,000,000 a year to make shark fin soup? “On the IUCN's Red List of endangered species, 50 shark species are listed as being at high risk of extinction (either Critically Endangered, Endangered, or Vulnerable) and 63 additional endangered shark species are approaching threatened status. Another 199 species of sharks are considered 'data deficient', many of which may well be endangered, but there is insufficient data to determine their status. There is also regional information available to indicate that sharks are functionally extinct in large parts of the …show more content…
In fact, some countries are already petitioning to ban the delicacy since they have seen what the after effects of killing a number of sharks equivalent to one-third of the population of the United States a year. I believe we can accelerate this process by posting graphs and stats onto social media to spread the word about finning. We can also appeal to our state government and plead for them to make a motion to pass a law banning, or at least limiting, the finning of sharks. All you would need to do is to send a letter to our governor. If that doesn’t work, start a petition. If one hundred people petitioned and each got fifty people, five thousand people would already be on the petition. Charities, such as sharkangels.org and www.sharktrust.org/, whose function is to stop finning are also available. With a few clicks of your mouse, you could donate money to support the efforts to get rid of finning. Finning is a major cause of the absence of sharks; therefore, if we stop or limit finning, then the ocean’s apex predator will be able to thrive once again. “You can and should make a difference before there aren’t sharks left. In fact a recent IUCN report has identified over 1/3 of all shark species (more than 500 in total) are facing extinction – some in our lifetimes. Destroying sharks and the oceans isn't a legacy we want to leave for future

However there is enough information to show that the shark fin soup industry is a major threat to the shark population and if we let this industry do as it wants sharks will go instinct within the next fifty years or less. As consumers we have a choice to make between two evils, the greater evil being the shark fin soup industry and the lesser evil the shark cage diving industry. Which industry should we support is the question and in my opinion the answer is quite clear. We should support the shark cage diving industry because unlike shark fin soup which tastes like nothing at all according to Chef Gordon Ramsey and involves the death of sharks across the globe, shark cage diving gives us a much more worth while experience that we can relive over and over again through pictures, videos, and memories of the experience. Include the fact that as a consumer you can feel proud of spending your money on the shark cage diving industry cause it will also help shark conservation efforts then the benefits greatly out weigh the negatives, especially compared to the shark fin soup…

The scarcity of resources has the potential to cause damage to modern society in the near future. Resources like food, water, and fuels help maintain society. Without proper access or enough resources to go around, society can be in for some consequences. In Jared Diamond’s essay, “The Last Americans”, he explains how the Mayan civilization collapsed due to a variety of reasons, one of which being a lack of resources. He then draws parallels to how the issue could play a role in modern society.…

Science Paper Marine biologists study the behaviors of all marine organisms. They also have a lot of knowledge on all marine organisms. However, everything there is to know about the carnivorous great white sharks’ species hasn’t been discovered yet. Scientists can only do so much with these organisms in a controlled environment (or captivity) before an incident occurs where the shark either dies or puts others in danger. Erik Vance’s article, “Why Great White Sharks Are Still a Mystery to Us” provides examples of instances where great whites were put in captivity: “They refuse to live behind glass—in captivity some have starved themselves or slammed their heads against walls.…

Sharks are not nearly as sinister as movies portray them to be, sharks are only following their instincts. Chris Lowe explains that sharks aren’t likely to even stalk prey, as the movies might suggest, he says it would be “too biologically expensive” given their need to constantly be in motion*check…

Speaking of righteousness, sharks need to be defended based on established facts. The federal agency, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) states “Despite their scary reputation, sharks rarely ever attack humans and would much rather feed on fish and marine mammals” (NOAA). In other words, humans are not part of sharks’ diet. It would aim for smaller fishes; therefore, deaths caused by shark attacks were often due to confusion, curious and self-protection (NOAA). To support this idea further, I will speak out of context for a later purpose.…

When buying fish at the store or eating at a seafood restaurant most people don’t give much thought to where the food they’re eating came from beyond “the ocean.” Even less consideration is put into how the fish was caught or if the practice is sustainable. Today’s mentality is all about instant gratification regardless of future consequences, whether it be health or environmental risk. Many people may think the Ocean is an inexhaustible source of food because it covers over 70% of the Earths surface and is as deep as many of the largest mountains are tall. This assumption is incorrect and in part feeds into the reason why over-fishing occurs.…
