Why Do People Wear Seat Belts Necessary?

Flames swarm around him, taking away his supply of oxygen one small breath at a time. He’s trying to unbuckle his seatbelt, but it’s jammed shut. He screams for help, yet the roaring of the flames drown out the sound of his voice. People stand by wanting to help, but fearing for their lives, as the car may explode any second. When the Police and Firefighters arrive they were too late he had been burnt to death. This scene that many Americans experience across the states and has scarred them for life. Every day more cars are made which makes the risk of a defect in your seat belt higher. Seat belt laws should not be compulsory because it’s an intrusion on our individual rights, people who wear seatbelts are more prone to reckless driving, and your insurance rates would not go down. The population who wear seat belts are more prone to reckless driving. Speeding, texting, changing lanes without looking or using a turn signal, eating, reading, tailgating, failure to yield, run[ning] stop signs/red lights—they all cause accidents. ("Seat Belt Laws Are Intrusive.") Negligence to wear a seatbelt does not put anyone else in danger, but yourself which should not be against the law. If anything, an argument you can make that people who wear seat belts are more prone to speeding and tailgating because they have a certain invincibility factor strapped to them. (“Seat Belt Laws Are Intrusive”). People may drive with a more risky behavior because they feel if they do get into a crash they won’t get hurt. The roads geometry, the drivers' behavior, and their trust of other drivers on the road all have to do with how safe the driver feels when (s)he is behind the wheel. (Blaker, Ted). Seat belts give people an excuse to themselves when they start driving risky and putting other people in danger. These are all reasons why the constituents who wear seatbelts are more prone to reckless driving. Seat belt laws are an intrusion on our rights is the second reason on why I think seatbelt laws should not be required. Your vehicle can be stopped anytime, day or night, by the police merely under suspicion a seatbelt is not in use. Dictating behavior to lower an insurance or societal cost will lead to other rules regulating behavior because it might cost money.
