Most people only consider competition cheerleading as a sport, others such as cheerleaders themselves consider any type of cheerleading as a sport, such as school cheer or competition cheer. There are a lot of benefits to why cheerleading is a sport, also to why cheerleading should be considered a sport. Cheerleading can be classified as a sport in many different ways such as, a varsity high school sport, or as a competition sport. Cheerleading requires the same amount of athletic ability that other sports such as football, basketball, or dance have, which is why cheerleading should be considered a sport.
During the course of the years, many legal companies have backed up the fact that cheerleading is a sport. “The American Association of Cheerleading Coaches and Advisors have developed cheer to be marked in the category of an athletic activity”(Tanner). Others debate that cheerleading is a sport, Jane Marella from Fox news asked people in an interview what there opinions are on if cheerleading is sport, a lot of them responded “ Gymnastics is a sport; dancing is a student activity, and cheerleading which has progressed so far from it’s rah-rah roots,is both. So wouldn 't it be nice if, instead of having to argue over the word, we could figure out a way to recognize a demanding female-dominated activity as a unique discipline unto itself- and give it the respect it merits all on its own? “
